Auto insurance ID cards

I didn’t either. I have to assume that those people literally never have someone else driving their car - while there has always been the possibility of someone else driving my car , so I’ve always kept the card in the glove compartment.

My apologies.

I’m like @Spoons – I take my phone with me on longer trips but usually not on very short ones. A phone may be small and portable but nothing beats the convenience of a simple piece of paper that lives permanently in the glove box.

My glove compartment may be larger than yours; it has enough room for the paperwork and a phone charging cable.

At least in my state, insurers are required to notify the DMV when that happens. DMV invalidates their plates immediately and sends them a snail-mail letter telling them to get insurance or turn in the plate. And to not drive until they get insurance. Any of the many police cars or public parking enforcement folks with automatic license plate readers will flag the car for immediate impoundment if seen.

Which has not eliminated uninsured motorists, but sure makes a dent in the problem.

Many states do that these days. And many of those don’t require you to carry around a piece of paper saying you have insurance, because the state knows anyway.

I just got my AAA Membership and Insurance renewal last week. Been a member 38 years and have never gotten anything for insurance other than a couple of paper sheets with cut-out foldable cards. 4 of them, to be exact, even though there is only one vehicle. When folded, the cards are business-card size and tuck behind my DL easily. Another copy goes in the glove box. The last two get filed with all the other paperwork.

I don’t know if they do it in Ontario where I am, but it really is trivial. All the insurer needs to do is batch out a report each night with the new/cancelled coverage for each VIN and upload to a web service. I say this as someone who has worked on IT systems for insurers since the mid-90s.

We used to have to submit policy numbers each year when getting new plate stickers, but they removed renewals completely this year.

It’s always been paper for me.

The only real change is both the DMV (Washington State) and my insurance company removed my address from the registration document and insurance card, respectively. Each only has my name.

When I asked about it the reason is to protect identity theft, and actual theft. Huh? Seems some potential thieves would watch as people parked at shopping malls and movie theaters would then break into vehicles, find the names and addresses, then go to your home and if unoccupied, break in and rob it.

Perhaps that was a problem when people left their keys in the car, “for a minute”?

I like the way things have progressed in Ontario. We used to have to renew license plates every year and pay a.hefty fee, and get an emissions test every two years as a condition for renewal. Life is so much better now that all that bureaucracy is gone!

We’ve had two cars stolen in our neighborhood yesterday. Both had the key fobs in the cars!

Imagine if the house key were attached to the car fob, and the car was stolen in a random parking lot, but had the home address in the glove box.

I’m guessing that was the security risk.

Yes, I had an interesting conversation with a cop once, when I gave him the piece of paper with the words “Proof of Insurance” and he claimed that it wasn’t proof of insurance. I think he was just being a Dick. I didn’t get a ticket. But it was a stupid waste of time.

I did get to use the term Schrödinger’s Insurance. He didn’t get it.

Yep, they know.
Where cops have access to computers in their cruisers. All your info pops right up.

I have my cards in the glove box in the same envelope they came it.
I have a digital copy on my phone.

Finally found someone else bothered by this! I hate this stupid paper ones that you have to print off now and cut on your own. It’s a pain in thee ass. They just don’t work with a wallet. You can laminate them. But I don’t have a laminator and I’m not buying one just to do an insurance card. The plastic ones were so convenient! I don’t like using my phone for proof of insurance, I just don’t want to pull my phone out if I need to show my insurance ID. It is something silly to be annoyed about, but I just loved the plastic! I was even considering getting a card customized just for that… so that I could have the plastic again, but then I remembered… insurance renews every so many months and I’d have to get one custom each time it renews…. I feel your pain. LOL.

Over here, that would invalidate their insurance.

I don’t need to carry proof of insurance as the cops can check on the computer. The only time proof might be a problem is during the gap between a starting new policy (not renewal) and the details getting on to the Motor Insurance Bureau’s database.

What would ever cause anyone to consider carrying a car insurance card on their person? The card is useless without the car. So whenever you might need the card you are guaranteed to have this big machine nearby with many cubic feet of internal storage space and a couple thousand pounds of carrying capacity. Surely you can find a place in there to put a single 8.5x11" piece of paper? Surely?

Also, why cut it out? Take the full sheet, fold in thirds like you would for snail mailing a letter in an envelope, then put the insurance sheet and the registration document in the envelope and leave the envelope in the car.

You have a point

Sorry if I came across as sarcastic or unpleasant. That sounded worse than I meant.
