My preferred supermarket used to contain a large refrigerated display case of salsa, hummus, specialty cheeses, etc. I went in there yesterday, and the case was filled with gallon containers of colored sugar-water. The other products were nowhere to be found. I asked four different employees where the other items went, and nobody had an answer. Only one offered to find out, so she left … and never came back. ---

My special snowflake of an ex-housemate is getting another dog we suspect she’ll insist is a “service” dog; ergo, the apartment complex where she’s living will HAVE to allow it. Mind you she already as another dog but the dog’s a princess and therefore couldn’t possibly do service-type jobs. Both she and the new dog are shepherds. Also the new dog is intact. So is the princess. She wants the princess to have another litter before she (the princess) becomes too old. You see where this is going, don’t you? All I can say is thank god it’s not happening under my nose. ---

A somewhat perturbing e-mail just arrived. - This is to notify you concerning your fund release order mandated during the first quarter of the year 2016. The finding revealed that your fund transfers were intercepted in the past due to the allegation that you were involved in financial irregularities and alleged money laundry practices. Allegation and conspiracy inspired by the financial institutions and their agents that instructed your fund transfer. I am the new AMF/WORLD BANK remittance, payment and portfolios coordinator assigned to reinstate several mismanaged intercepted international payments… I am very much aware of your ordeal towards actualizing the release of your long delayed payment which might have caused you much fortune such as other similar cases… I wonder why you never complained… In this letter, I shall guide you and provide you with all you needed, to contact the World Bank Group affiliate who will facilitate and ensure your fund is delivered and released to you within few days.\* The World Bank agent805 who sent me this e-mail (Michael Bouchard) sounds like an upright guy. Do you think it would be OK for me to send him my banking information, or should I be worried that he actually is an Interpol agent? ---

@ Chimera I fully understand and sympathize with your problem. Being a customer of these places, an employee of several of them, a manager of one, I know every side of this particular story. I know why the service is shit. I talk about it all the time. These places don’t pay enough to cover both rent and food, thus the high numbers of employed persons who get EBT and subsidized rent controlled housing, despite a demand for employees and plenty of unemployed people willing to work. It has something to do with the fact that most of these businesses are owned by the same company so each corporation controls the wages of 100,000 employment locations apiece and they’ve all collectively decided that, although prices of things have gone up and up and up, month by month, year by year, it’s very important to make sure that workers only get paid what they were getting paid a decade ago, because fuck them and fuck their cost of living. That’s how you get Now Hiring signs everywhere, and no one who works at the place as any kind of training or expertise, and none of them fucking care. Place I worked at (repeating myself again) had a turnover rate of 300% annually. That means the average lifespan of a worker there was four months. Hint: They did not all win the lottery. And all they needed to do to keep the job was show up to work in uniform. That’s how low our standards were, and not by choice. They stopped showing up, because there’s no reason to show up. That’s why your service is shitty. The employees that did care have moved on. The ones that treated the job like a job and gave customers service and cared and actually did training and bothered to show up for their shifts? They’re gone. Now you have semi-employed single mothers who may or may not be there because they can’t find a babysitter, but they have a second income and a third income in the form of their boyfriend who works 2 of these shit jobs as well in order to pay the bills, so she can show up irregularly and not care, call out due to period pains, shit like that. No skin off her back, she can always get another job literally anywhere. Why? Because they’re all desperate to hire. But no one is willing to pay for real training, or pay enough to attract non-transient employees. I discuss this and many other things in my Professional Opponents of the Minimum Wage thread. The rebuttals are always fascinating reading. So many good reasons to artificially deflate wages through a lack of competition. It’s so great for everyone. As a manager, I’d have \*loved \*to fire each and every employee doing a shitty job. But guess what, we pretty much hired anyone who would walk through the door, because I cannot personally make 1,000 pizzas per day with no crew. Even a shitty crew helps me go home with fewer complaints than no crew. Aiming for 9 out of 10 customers happy is better than being able to only serve 1 out of 10. That 10 percent unhappy number is still ridiculously unacceptable, but what am I going to do, if I cannot offer my crew raises that matter? I have no way to incentivize good work and punish the bad work. If you can’t retain good employees, all you get are bad ones or empty spaces where an employee should be. On the schedule, the good employees got 40+ hours. The shitty ones got as little as I could allow. But at the end of the day, I don’t have enough good employees to fill a schedule. Eventually, there’s going to be a whole day where my good phone-answering person is not working, and I have to suffer through shitty phone-answering person. Free market. What a pipe dream. Monopolism beats free market capitalism. But let’s all keep drinking that Tim Worstall kool aid. He’s from England, he’s probably posh as fuck, obviously knows what he’s talking about. People who actually worked and managed in the industry? Buffoons, all of them. ---

Lady spends 10-15 minutes sitting in the hairwash stations chatting with a friend while we sit there. And sit there. And sit there. She keeps chatting away. Finally wanders over and asks Who’s first.
