I suppose if we could turn them off it would be okay, but I suspect for those who have them enabled only half of them would post a picture anyway (I know I wouldn’t).
Besides, the hamsters are tired enough as it is. I absolutly don’t want to trade avatar priviliges for extra time-outs, thankyouverymuch.
I know I have a much easier time remembering people when I have a visual to hang on the name. I don’t even have a problem with animated .gifs, as long as they’re subdued (on the other mb I frequent one user has one that’s 8 or 9 cat related haikus. It’s cute.) On the other hand, it’ll eat up bandwidth and be one more thing for mods to keep track of.
So, um, I have no preference.

Um, let me offer the end result of this poll:
Many people here hate the idea of avatars.
Many people here like the idea of avatars.
Many people here couldn’t care less if we added them or not.
There, that saves us the effort.
How do I know the answer to this poll? Because we discuss/debate avatars in here about every, oh, two months or so. They’ve been batted around in at least two threads in here since the future changes intended by the new owners were posted. The debate always produces the results I just gave.

I don’t mind a small unanimated avatar. Use them on a couple of boards that I don’t go to much. I don’t quite understand the hatred.
But if it means the board will perform even worse than it does now, then no.

I vote NAY. Occasionally you see one that’s really neat, but the vast majority are eyesores that are cool only in the mind of the person subjecting the rest of us to it. No avatars is just one of the mnay little touches I like about this Board.
Nay. I’m not for avatars, for all the reasons outlined above. It wouldn’t cause me to stop coming here, but I wouldn’t be a fan.

I just had a thought though. How about if you could have your user name appear in a different font and/or color? It would be easier to keep track of who is saying what in a thread but not be as distracting (and sometimes annoying) as avatars. What say ye?
