Usually, I just quarter an avocado and eat it with nothing on it. I like avocados. ---

I refrigerate tomatoes and potatoes, but mainly because I’m single and may not eat them before they go bad, and I’ve always heard that there are few things that smell fouler than a rotten potato. Bananas and avocados are best not refrigerated, however; don’t know about avocados, because I usually use them as soon as I bring them home from the store, but bananas will pseudo-ripen too rapidly in the fridge. ---

You shouldn’t refrigerate potatoes, because they have a lot of starch. Refrigerations turns the starches into sugar. ---

I love avocados on lots of things but for me the magic is a BLT. If I’m having lunch and a place has a BLTA, I am ordering it. I feel like it balances out the sandwich perfectly. ---

After a while, customers at Ptomaine Tommy’s would just say “Gimme a bowl of size!” when they wanted straight chili. In the '60s, a “California burger” where I grew up (MPS/STP) was a regular hamburger topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. I always imagined they were triple-deckers as well because that’s what Gidget ate. ---

Actually, now that I think of it, there’s actual a regional chain called Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, based out of Kansas, that also refers to a “California burger” as one with lettuce, tomato, onion, and thousand island on its menu (I don’t necessarily remember the burger sauce being part of the “California burger” definition at the diners I was talking about above, but it may well have been. Avocado is great but I usually prefer it eaten sliced and almost on its own, add just a little S&P and a squirt of lemon or lime. I acquired a taste for avocado toast while on holiday in Croatia, where it was just a normal dish, neither new nor hip. They’d often put tuna too…it was nice but I don’t tend to do this with my own toast. ---

Like buying a latte at Starbucks instead of just making your own coffee for $0.50. Not that it still isn’t crap advice, but making food at home is rarely targeted as a cost wasting choice. Edited to add - my avocado toast would cost me $4 at home, because 75% of the avocados I buy go straight from hard as a rock to mushy rotten garbage, or inexplicably going bad while staying rock hard.
