Baby-gal wrek and I are sorta estranged (she’s not to be confused with the Lil’wrekker) at the moment. The estrangement story is for another day. She shows up here. I’m surprised and delighted. She hemmed and hawed and fumbled around with elaborate 'what ifs" I knew what she wanted. I played dumb. She did exactly what I knew she’d do, run straight to her Pop. Of course he says “Yes, baby” not considering any ramifications. Just, “Yes” She’s not working at the moment. She has a nursing degree and license. Has recently decided this may not be her thing. She was working for an abstract writing/filing concern. That job fell through. She lives with a guy and his people we’re not enamored of. That’s okay, it’s her life after-all. I still don’t have to like it. So…I was asked(ordered🤔) to switch money around. So I did. I did think to myself, getting the cart before horse, much? Her, her Pop, and Son-of-a-wrek go car shopping. Ahem! Any one want to ask my opinion? They come home with a shiny kinda new Nissan thingamajig. Not brand new. But nearly. In my name. Why you ask? So to relieve BigWrek of his conscious, or the need _not_ to have to call insurance or go to the DMV. You guess. I took care of these things. She’s bought and paid for, legal and free to ride. Hugs, kisses and promises to payback abounded. Rainbows and sunshine all around! Except. BIG EXCEPT: I determined through nefarious means (no really it’s public info) that her guy friend has 6 worrying tickets on her old car. His truck is impounded for no telling what bad thing. And he’s surrendered his driver’s license. I’m sure he didn’t walk up to a cop and willingly hand it over. I’m fairly sure they took it away. So, being the stickler I am about legalities and the wish to keep myself outta hot water I had him excluded from driving _my_ Nissan thingamajig. I read Baby-gal the riot act. He will NOT be allowed to drive _my_ car. And I told her I would repossess _my_ car if I found out he did. I will use nefarious ways to do it if I have to. She tried to tell me, “Ma, he has to get to work!” I could care less if he goes to work or anywhere. _She_, herself has to get to work. Soon. She made promises, borrowed gas money. And left. I had hoped need would drive her home. I told BigWrek this is why I ignored her pleas to help her get a car. He failed to get it. I want her home. I want her near. And safe. Happy. Fed. I’d give anything for that to be. I know, I know. It’s not good to want to keep the baby chicks in the nest. But I don’t care. I still wish it. Baby-gal needs her Mom. I just know it. ---

I excluded him from driving it under my insurance policy. And, of course because I say so. I’m looking into a way to inform law enforcement and whether it could be done and what it would mean. I can’t see where that’s a possibility unless they tag the car and stop it on a regular basis whomever is driving. And I’m sure that’s a big ask and not worth LEs time. We’re also wondering if we could monitor it’s location on GPS on a regular basis. Til I trust the situation better. I think she’ll try to honor my wishes. They may convince her otherwise. They’re not good people. I doubt any of them have legally registered and insured cars. Not to mention valid drivers licenses. I’m more than concerned. ---

Oh, Good Golly! @Beckdawrek, my beloved Doper Sister, you got yourself a big nasty can of worms. If I were in your shoes, I’d raise the coverage on that car. Baby-gal Wrek fully intends on letting this live-in jerk drive that car. (“But he has to get to work!”) And something bad bad bad will probably happen. She texted this morning he was mad about it. Maybe I facilitated the first brick in wall falling. Ol’ ma can but have hope. ---

How much you wanna bet that as soon as she showed it to him, he yelled “She can’t dothat!” Maybe put a bug in Baby-gal’s ear that if he drives the car and gets stopped for any reason, he can be busted for GTA. I strongly advise you to raise the specific legal issue as a separate question here, Beck. My thoughts are: 1. She definitely is going to let him drive the car (what Beck doesn’t know won’t hurt her). 2. The husband is likely to get in a wreck. 3. Insurance won’t cover the wreck since his name has been excluded from the policy. 4. State law still mandates that the car owner is responsible for liability. Thus 5. Instead of a $1,000 yearly increase in insurance rates Beck will be responsible for $100,000 plus liability settlement. ---

That’s a worrying prediction. In essence, you’re predicting that Beck is playing chicken with the daughter’s boyfriend, except that he has the advantage that he clearly doesn’t give a damn and has nothing he cares for at stake. ---

Insurance guy read the policy out to me and sent me an email. The car will be covered for liability if guy friend wrecks it. Of course we have comprehensive coverage, but it will be negated to the lower coverage, if he’s driving. If he wrecks and the Nissan is banged up or totaled it will be a loss to us. But the other vehicle will be covered under the liability. It’s not a cheap policy, to be sure. But I had to cover my ass. If he hits a pole and tears the car up it will be a loss to us. And he will not be covered medically. I guess he could sue us for the liability. But who knows. I’ll get the actual paper policy this week and recheck if this is true. I have a lawyer on retainer. He’ll explain it better for me. ---
