Hang, hanged, means to execute; hang, hung, means to suspend. That’s the difference. You’re correct about lie vs. lay, though.

I suspect I confused it with German, in which you find hangen, gehangen and hangen, gehangt. Surprise surprise, the first is transitive, the second is not.

The thread was fun. People were joking around. I was kind of poking fun at all of the recent threads concerning taking a long hard look at ourselves. I think therapy (and psychotheraputic tactics) can be a good thing, but they can also be a joke sometimes.
People (including me) are always stepping in and offering this armchair stuff. If it pops up in a thread where it’s not the main focus, it doesn’t seem to get the thread closed. So I suppose it’s only allowed in small doses.
I don’t mind people pointing out what they think my problems are. Especially if they do it without malice. I think that was what was going on - no malice. Sure, someone could have stepped in and been a jerk, but no one did, really. I look at something like this as kind of dual thing. On one hand it could be very funny. On the other, perhaps some of us could actually gain a little insight into the way others percieve us here, and try to reconcile it with them or ourselves (whichever one of us has it wrong).
It seems there is some serious touchiness when people bring up analyzing behavior here as the subject of a thread. Good thing or bad thing? I don’t know, but I’ve made a note of it in my book of rules/taboo’s I seem to have broken here:
- Don’t try to get people to offer their ideas about what may be wrong with the board or the posters.
I suppose the reason for the above is to keep away nastiness. But I thought that was why the pit was here, to contain potentially rough and tumble issues. If it were up to me, I would of given the thread a little more time to develop before killing it. If they closed every thread that had the potential to get nasty, there’d be a ton more closed threads. Perhaps this thread was exceptionally potentially nasty, I don’t know.
In the end it aint my decision, and I don’t care. Like all of my posts, I was just trying to have fun. If I caused anyone discomfort it was not intentional. If I broke the rules, sorry. Respect to the Mods and that’s that.
Closed or no, the thread’s a winner in my book: It ended up being set up like it was in a nuthouse (nice SDMB analogy), had Krispy stuttering, me and IzzyR analyzing and being analyzed, gallows fodder begging us to take away his degree, k.os running around like a madman, Lib in the corner analyzing himself, DocCathode hearing voices (Barry Manilow no less!), and a mod claiming to be a manic-depressive with schizophrenic tendencies. That’s definately comedy in my book.

Yeah, the thread could have been fun, but isn’t it kind of jerkish to post potentially volatile threads that then cause the moderators headaches in having to either mediate, move or close them? Why give them extra work just for the sake of pushing the envelope? Why be another Wildest Bill? (Meant in general, not directly at dj.)

Okay, in order of importance:
#1: I would have closed the thread even had Esprix said nothing. Or even had Esprix jumped in with wild abandon.
#2: I do not consider it jerky on dalovindj’s part to have started the thread; I may consider it slightly naive, but he hasn’t been here for two years and seen the kind of massive neurotic conflagrations that can result. Certainly, it was not specifically malicious, and was meant in good fun. I just am not of the opinion that fun would have been the final result.
#3: I really don’t care for applesauce.
#4: I’ve always used the mnemonic: “After you are hanged, you will get to lie for a long time. But if you’re hung, you get to lay for a long time.” Am I incorrect?
I’d like to know what k.os’s definition of “trolling” is.
I’d guess it’s something along the lines of a post based in malice, with it’s main purpose being an attempt to get another poster riled up. If I was the guessing sort.

If you read my posts on this thread, you will see that I have admitted that I misunderstood Esprix’s position. If you allow me to use an analogy, I saw it like someone stepping on a Soccer field, standing in the middle and saying: “You shouldn’t run around like that, people could get hurt. And event though I’m on the field, don’t anyone pass me the ball, or else…”
Esprix explained what he meant by his post, and I realized I had misjudged his position.
I’m sorry I overreacted and accused Esprix of trolling based on my perception of what he wrote. I guess I should have asked for clarifications instead of starting accusations. Well, we live & we learn. I haven’t been here that long, and I still have a lot to learn.
I sincerly hope Esprix accepts my apologies. I overreacted and I apologise for it.

That’s not trolling. Trolling would be walking onto the field with a bunch of roadflares tied to your chest with an alarm clock duct taped to your head, threatening to blow up all of creation if they don’t stop running around like that. You’re bound to get an inflammatory response to an empty claim/threat.

I like your example! I don’t know if you read the thread, but I found most responses were in good fun. However, if something like that has been done in the past and has turned into a giant flamefest, I can understand why it was locked. But we were having fun, dammit!
