Sorry, y’all. I’ve been busy whippin’ folks into shape, or I would have responded sooner.

> I have to disagree about Celestina meaning whore or witch. The name comes from a 16th century teatre play by Fernando de Rojas. Celestina, the character, is an old and somewhat dishonest woman that arranges marriages. The name is now used to refer to match-makers and women who procure sexual partners for men (alcahueta in Spanish).

Actually, Celestina written by Fernando de Rojas–as far as anyone really knows–was first published in 1499 so technically it’s a 15th Century play. Subsequent Spanish renditions of Rojas’ work came out in the early 1500s, and the first English translation done by James Mabbe was published in 1631. I agree that Celestina the character is _much_ more than a witch or a whore. Those labels are ascribed to her because she didn’t fit the standards for comportment imposed on women of the 15th Century and arguably in the 21st Century as well. Just think about how threatening a woman who can support herself by her own means, who is subject to no father, husband, or religion, who is sexually free, has knowledge of medicine and other things that are outside the sphere of the education that women of that time received, and so on would be to the social structure of her time. That society wouldn’t know what to do with her because she cannot be classified easily, yet they fear her because they do not know what she is capable of doing to them. Rojas is playing on these tensions and a whole lot of other stuff in his work. Fascinating stuff.

**joyofdiscord** , gracias para la correccion. Despues de que lo escribi “me duele mi cabeza,” me pense que la forma correcta es “me duele la cabeza,” pero estuve cansada. No puedo usar mucho mi Espanol. Que lastima que lo he olvidado mucho a eso lenguaje complejo y fascinante. Muchisimas gracias para las groserias. 😃

> Well, it would be ta maman, and in my experience, French curses don’t really involve family members as much as Spanish ones do. (They have fils de pute (sonova whore) and so forth, but that’s about it.)

Ooops. I just code mixed didn’t I? [giggle] It’s so interesting. I wonder why French folks don’t involve family members in insulting phrases as much as other cultures?

**Estilicon** , [giggle] some days I feel young and some days I feel old, but I don’t tell folks what my age is. I will say that I’m amused when I hear my students say to each other or to me that I sound just like their mamas. 😃 But no, I didn’t know that Hispanic/Latino/Spanish teenagers and twenty-year-olds generally use offensive words to greet each other. I know that among certain populations in America this may occur. Unfortunately my mother raised me to be a lady [sigh] so I don’t engage in such practices.

> I am also shocked to discover that you want to learn even more insults, celestina you are a bad girl, unfortunately I can’t think of anymore.

LOL!!! Why are you shocked, hon? I’m curious to learn the kind of Spanish that my teachers wouldn’t dare teach me in school. :innocent eyes: Why should that be so bad? If you do happen to remember any more groserias, please don’t hesitate to drop me an email, or if you just want to write me in Spanish, I just _love_ getting email. 🙂 As far as varieties of Spanish go, I don’t know enough about the differences between Chilean, Mexican, Columbian, Puerto Rican, Castillian, and so forth to have a preference. Gosh, I wish I could afford to travel more. ☹

> Don’t chance your name, celestina is a lovely name, and I think also the name of a musical instrument…just learn how to use your powers accordingly.

Aww, don’t worry. I like my handle just fine and have no plans to change it. 🙂 And I do use my powers for good. 🆒 Thanks for the tips on feminizing insults.

**Shalmanese** , :innocent eyes: Why shouldn’t I take up a position as a teacher? [giggle] Don’t you think I’d make a good teacher?

**essvee** , thanks for sharing. I’m surprised to say that I found “pinche” in my Spanish dictionary as well. I’ve got a kick ass Spanish dictionary. 🙂

[giggle] Merci beau coup, hon.
