Since [this thread on driving while smoking pot](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=16151494&posted=1#post16151494) is getting badly hijacked by our dialogue, I thought it appropriate to portage it over here and out of there.
Both you and **Marconi and Cheese** seem to be mighty amused by my posts. **Marconi** is proud of how you handled my last post.
I dont’ wish _anyone_ any harm but if you insist on placing the lives of everyone else on the road, I don’t have very much respect for your existence. You want to party on and be The Dude or Jah Rule or Jimmy Cliff or whoeverthefuck? Coolio. This is America. Do as you wish. But the very second you play God with someone else’s life because you want to behave in an illegal manner, then you’re a very very messed up person and are deserving of derision.

If you were an EMT in NY than you may have picked blood-spattered victims who I knew, alive and dead, out of wrecks as the direct result of pot and alcohol, so I understand your point of view.

You may be making a bit of an unwarranted assumption about me here. Based on what though? All I’ve done in that thread was to question whether there is “any reason to assume that stoned people are - paranoid, distracted, overcompensating, etc.” …
A fair enough question. And I’ve agreed that some people are affected that way. I maintain that some are not. How do you go from that to imputing arrogance and contempt to me - if I’m the “Jerry Garcia” you’re referring to:

I don’t promote that people should get stoned and drive, never have recommended it.
You wanted a moment of my time. Fair enough, you’ve got it. More than that I’m afraid I can’t spare, as your posts are riddled with assumptions barely worth the time it takes to dismiss them

People who drive stoned, drunk, or distracted are all Bad - they are endangering other people for no good reason.

I think there’s an issue about where the line is on drunk, stoned, or distracted. Does drinking one beer mean you’re drunk? In Japan it does. Does taking one hit mean you’re high? Does changing a radio station mean you’re distracted?

I wasn’t “proud” of **Ayatollah Yawuntz** ’s post, but I did admire his ability towards diplomacy and restraint while at the same time poking a bit fun at your little diatribe. Note that this is what _I_ took away from the post. May not be what was intended.

Impaired driving is a bad thing. I’m sure your EMT skills are of the highest caliber and I don’t doubt for a second you’ve saved many lives. I’m questioning your forensic accident reconstruction skills. What are your qualifications in that regard? I’d like to know how you can surmise, without a doubt, that marijuana is the sole/direct cause of a wreck, 'cause that’s the kind of stuff we’d all like to know.

I’m genuinely curious about your animosity towards marijuana and its users. Why the hatred? Did Harry Anslinger tell you bedtime stories when you were a youngster? The vitriolic nature of your posts makes me you developed your opinion long before your EMT experiences.
Frankly, you express a certain naivety towards marijuana when you say things like this:

That is where the trouble starts - the grey area. I’d say use your best judgement, but people traditionally have terrible judgement.

You have to understand something: **Cartooniverse** lives in his own little… well, Cartooniverse, where actors playing a love scene with a minor should be arrested for rape, and gun rights activists lobby for the right to blow off the faces of children.
Best to just pat him on the head and say, “That’s nice.”

Try listening to the Joe Rogan podcast. I enjoy listening to his views on many issues but about 75% of the show is pot talk and how awesome he is when he’s stoned.
I remember sitting around in college “experimenting” with some pretty serious stoners and hearing this conversation: Stoner 1 “I can’t be high when I’m trying to study I never get anything done.” Stoner 2 “Bullshit, I think much more clearly and learn better when I’m high. I always smoke when I’m studying.” Stoner 1 graduated with a degree in architecture. Stoner 2 dropped out and none of his friends or family heard from him for about 20 years.

I can’t imagine somebody of driving age actually saying that. Granted, stupid statements are common coming from the mouths of stoners but this evokes images of a 14 year old’s attempt to sound cool.
If you’ve hear this many times you may want to consider finding a new set of acquaintances.

And I have a close friend who would smoke one joint during the composition of each page of a term paper, got high marks, and went on to get a law degree which is useful since he heads his own law firm.
He hasn’t toked in 30 years but it was pretty obvious that his use of weed didn’t stop him from his education.
I had another friend who’s always sober girlfriend remarked that she could always tell when he was driving stoned because he would drive like he was taking his driving test - hands at 10 and 2, no rolling stops, 2 miles under the speed limit, properly signally lane changes etc. She said it would take a few minutes longer to get home because he was driving so damn perfect. He too no longer tokes and drives like most traffic - a little over the speed limit, rolling stops, etc.
I’m not an advocate but I realize that there are buzzed and stoned people on the road. Most of them will go their whole lives without harming themselves or others. Some of them won’t. For safety’s sake we make it illegal for EVERYONE.
So while I would prefer that the stoners not drive buzzed I’m not going to panic about it. Besides I’m too busy dodging the half awake drivers on their way to work in the morning and the cell phone talkers on their way home. Those people appear to be using much less of the brains for driving than a guy doing tokes.
And FYI - I don’t smoke weed anytime including driving.

I was just refuting the assertion that those conversations don’t happen. I was not trying to imply that all stoners drop out of life. I have been around the block a few times and have seen all sorts.
