I tip my hat to you. Got anything about this one? I’ll grant that this one is open to interpretation, although I think the unbiased ones are hard to swallow. I’d link to just the images if I could. Sorry to ‘spoil’ the offense.
No, it’s my exaggeration as a way of calling him a bigoted asshole.
Charlie Brown (because, to me, that loaf of bread in the cave looks a lot like his head) has passed out after a long night of drinking red wine. He is going to be sealed in with the stone until he sleeps it off.
Just an artful way of restating the general Christian concept of a new deal from the original Jewish God.
To me, this toon is clearly offensive to Muslims. I’ll admit that just like many here think Christian fundamentalism is crap, I think Islam is crap as well. Only in that sense can I see any humour. However stating such in national publication does not serve the ideals of a pluralistic society. Even more so, I’m disgusted by Hart’s denial of intent in that cartoon.
Not in a million years. When I first read your post, I assumed you were joking.
From where do you get “new deal?” The art clearly has Christianity replacing Judaism, and that’s certainly going to offend most Jews. And then the “forgive them” quote is taken out of context. In Luke, it’s being applied to the people who are crucifying Jesus. In the image, because of the menorah, the comment is directed at Jews.
I was trying to say that I would have preferred to link to the images themselves, since you had not seen them before, instead of linking to pages where people explained why they felt the cartoons were offensive or inoffensive.
“‘Separation of Church and State’ folks are trying to separate us from the love of Christ.”
The bird isn’t slowing down the mail. Turtles are slow anyway, and the turtle isn’t showing any strain. And the turtle is not drowning the bird out, he’s joining in to praise Jesus (although he’s doing it, in kind of a slow-witted way, by quoting from the postal oath).
I’m pretty sure there are no Muslims who think the Koran is the word of God as spoken to Allah.
Seriously though, I think your actual question here is “Do I know any Muslims who don’t consider every word of the Koran to be taken literally?”, to which the answer is yes, I do. And I note that, even then, people are likely to disagree on exactly what the Koran means. Just like, shock horror, pretty much all religions and any kind of movement based on a text.
I’ve sent a letter to Mr. Hart asking him to clarify the meaning of the “Infamy” strip.
Personally, I’m quite certain that he meant that we’ve been seduced into not caring about Pearl Harbor by the material goods that Japan offers us … but hopefully we’ll soon have clarification like with the “Church and State” strip.
Wow. That ought to be enlightening! Thanks, chorpler. The thought scampered across my tiny little mind briefly, but I thought for sure this thread would fall off the front page before I came back from Company Holiday Party HellTM.
I’ve got two things to say about this. One is that a picture paints a thousand words, so yeah, it’s not beyond the realm of imagination that Hart’s few words would paint a fraction of that. The other is that he doesn’t have to be a great artist to convey his views as incompletely as he must have to spawn such confusion over what he meant. He’s a better artist than I am, because I can’t draw to save my life, but you’re right. I do have an imagination.
I’m not asking people to buy into all six points. I wondered at which of them he was getting at myself. It seems that I’m not alone in reading the strip the way I did, and neither are you alone in the way you read it. There isn’t a whole lot of gray area here. Perhaps that’s what the man was going for. Maybe we’ll get lucky and chorpler will get a response that ferrets out the meaning for us.
All I’m saying is that if you have known people in your life that actually DO believe the (very paraphrased) six points above, then it isn’t a stretch to apply it to a guy who seems to have gotten quite a mean little fervor going on in his art for the last couple years. If that’s not what he meant, ok then!
