> **Recovering Republican** , do you have school aged kids? I ask because it may look to outsiders like the schools are handing out pediatric psych meds like they used to hand out candy, but doctors are the ones prescribing meds, with parental consent. Or at parental instigation. Not to say some schools don’t talk up the concept a lot, but the parents at least have to agree. Heaven knows the percent of kids on meds sounds way too high. My daughter has ADHD, and our schools did not push the idea of meds, but wanted to be informed. And we wanted to keep the teachers apprised of the situation with my daughter.
>
> Both my kids are in special ed, so they each get an Individualized Education Plan, as required by Federal law. It’s great for the kids with serious special needs (at least in my distrct), but if every student had an IEP the school system would grind to a halt just from the required meetings. I agree teachers should be flexible to meet their students’ needs, and have tools to support that, but a cafeteria approach to elementary education is not simple or cheap.

My niece has ADHD. So does my brothers’ nephew, although I kind of doubt it. That kid can totally focus in on a video game or something he’s actually interested in.

In my niece’s case, her mother didn’t let them drug her up on Ritalin. Instead the Catholic School she went to (the same one I went to 30 years ago) taught her concentration and study techniques.

I do think it’s over-diagnosed. I also think that the schools just find drugged kids easier to manage than unmedicated ones, and frankly, if you are just sitting on your ass waiting for that big pension at 55, that’s awesome. Again, so what if 20% of them can’t read their diplomas. Not your problem.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party keeps cashing those big checks from the NEA and AFT, and keeps getting loads of dependent graduating every year who vote Democratic, and if someone dares suggest “Hey, maybe little Johnny might do better at that Catholic School.” you get the ACLU out their screaming about some imaginary wall between Church and State.

And of course, as I point out, Democratic politicians NEVER inflict Public schools on their own kids. When I went to Catholic Schools here in Chicago, I got to hob-nob with the children of the Chicago Machine Elite, baby. “Ha-ha, your dad’s under indictment!” Good times.

Because the way you guys tell it, kids lives will be ABSOLUTELY RUINED if they hear about Adam and Eve in a Public School, apparently. I mean, so much so, that you guys spend millions of dollars getting the ACLU out there suing anyone who even suggests such a thing.

The fact they graduate Ritalin zombies who can’t read their diplomas, meh, not so much. But they didn’t hear any of that eeeeevil Christian Mythology, that’s the important thing.

Well, guess what, guy, I’m here to tell you that I heard that story in a school, and it was not the end of the world, man. I’m not even particularly religious at this point in my life.

> As for the oil drilling in the Gulf, it would take years before any of it reached the market. Obama’s actions did diddly squat about oil prices. Face it, the world’s appetite for oil is growing faster than the ability to produce it. Face another fact, the US’s share of the worlds oil reserves is much less than its share of world oil usage.

Quite the contrary. Making indecisive war in Libya has kept Libyan oil off the world market, allowing the rest of OPEC to increase prices. Similarly, reducing the amount of drilling and exploration of the gulf (remember, the price of oil is based on futures) has allowed the same. Finally, let’s not forget that he’s printing money like there’s no tomorrow, which has devalued the dollar. (Something my cousin pointed out to me yesterday. He’s a stockbroker or something.)

> What could Obama do that wouldn’t be surrendering in Afghanistan? Is anything short of saying “we’ll be there forever” a surrender, in your view?

HOw about- “We are going to stay until all of the Taliban are dead or in prisons.”

Clearly, that’s not what he’s doing. He boosted it to make it look like he had a go with it. He managed to get Bin Laden, I’ll give him that one, so he can claim we acheived something.

But there is no sensible person who believes that once our troops are gone, the Taliban won’t be in charge of the country within months. Well, I guess we can hope that when they are back in charge, they won’t roll out the welcome mat for whatever is left of Al Qaeda.

Now, I’m a fair guy. I will FREELY ADMIT Bush neglected this theatre of the war for far too long. And I think that the Pakistanis have been playing both ends against the middle. And I think it’s rather a farce to say we are promoting democracy when our guys steals the election.

But let’s not forget, Obama called Afghanistan the “War of Necessity” while he derided Iraq as the “War of Choice”. (In reality, all wars are wars of choice, it’s just that all the choices usually suck.)

> The Republicans have some strange and odd beliefs that they blame everybody else for. you are the first I have encountered who believes them all. Amazing.

Obviously, you need to get out some more. I’m relatively kind to Obama compared to a lot of what I hear out there. For instance, I’ve never called him a Muslim or a Communist, nor have I ever suggested he was born in Kenya, but I know a lot of people who believe all those things are true. I only blame the guy for what he’s actually screwed up, and give him credit for the things he has done right.

> You are aware that we had an enormous oil spill in the gulf, aren’t you. There was a moratorium on drilling until that was kind of cleaned up. It has been lifted. But allowing drilling does not result in oil the next day. It takes a few years to get on line.
> Some stupid Dems think we should regulate the drilling and inspect the drilling platforms. I guess you would be against that too.

I have no problem with inspection and regulating. I have a big problem when the inspection and regulating is done by people who think we need to drive less, $4.00 a gallon gas will save the planet, and have said, “Never let a crisis go to waste”. I might think that they are using a crisis to acheive other ends.

> [@](#):
>
> What does Libya have to do with it? Do you think it is a major American supplier?

No, but the price of oil is based on WORLD WIDE production. We may never see a drop of Libyan oil, (in fact, most of our oil comes from ourselves, Canada, Mexico and Venezuala.) but taking it out of the mix means that Hugo can sell his oil to the Europeans and get a better price for it.

See my comments above.

I think the problem with Obama’s approach is that he put a time limit on our continued involvement, instead of a victory condition. Oh, yeah, and removing McChrystal as commander because someone quoted him saying disparaging things about Biden. Yup, let’s remove the most clear minded guy we possibly have from command. That ought to do it.

You’re right, Bo, nobody on your side actually refers to the Bamster as “The One”.

I guess when the guy says things like “This was the moment the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal” he has a pretty impressive opinion of his own abilities.

And you all still voted for him after this. This was said before he officially nominated. That should have been the moment when Democratic elders said “Whoops” and sent Hillary a nice fruit basket.

The ironic thing is, Hillary actually got more votes, but because Florida and Michigan weren’t counted and some bizarre stuff with superdelegates, you guys took a gamble on “the one” who was going to reverse the rise of oceans and stuff.

If that happens, the correct reaction will not be to laugh, but to freak the fuck out because someone somewhere will have horked up reality as we know it and the space-time continuum to a very serious degree. I’m talking up-is-down, Death on a Pale Horse, cats and dogs living together business.

Let me put it this way, dog: Bachmann would have zero chance of being elected even if you disintegrated every American outside of Minnesota on Election Day. She would have a slight chance if you further atomized every Minnesotan outside of her Congressional district, but then she might also lose to a brown paper bag with a funny face drawn on it.
Which would actually make a much better president, too.

Nope, I have no use for the TEA party and said so. I understand it. I understand the outrage. I’m just sorry so many of you don’t. But I think that anger is misdirected.

I was actually willing to give Obama a chance, but honestly, the more I see the guy up there flailing and fingerpointing, rather than, oh, what is that word I’m looking for- AH - LEADING, the more I think he’s the problem.

Seriously, comparing the budget process to your kid’s homework? After you haven’t presented a budget yourself for 2 1/2 years? Really?

Okay, guy, you can keep telling yourself that. And you can even take comfort in the fact that Obama is leading Bachmann in polls at this point. BUt in few of those polls is he very far north of 50%.

Fact is, Obama himself is going to be the issue in 2012, not whether Bachmann scares you or not. If the economy gets worse, and frankly, I think it’s going to because there are a lot of landmines in the road ahead, his position is going to get weaker.

For myself, I’m hoping Rick Perry gets into it, because he could unite all the different factions and present a strong front. He has a strong leadership record.

For Bachmann, a few things.

First, unlike Palin, she learns from her mistakes and she doesn’t pick unnecessary fights. She can tone down the crazy when she needs to.

Second, she very telegenic and appealling on a cosmetic level.

Third- can’t put too fine a point on this. She’s a woman. Running against a woman is always problematic, because it throws in a whole lot of other factors. I know a lot of women who aren’t left or right, but really didn’t like the way Obama beat up on Hillary in 2008.

I think there is a pretty clear difference between self-confidence and megalomania.

Thinking your election is going to cause the ocean to recede and the earth to heal is really kind of in the Megalomaniac category…

Well to start with, respecting their family and religion might be a good way to make the kid a lot more responsive to anything else you are trying to teach them.

If the kid’s parents see the schools as liberal indoctrination camps that they have to undo all the damage every night (and really, that is EXACTLY how a lot of parents see public schools) it isn’t a co-operative environment.

Which is why we need to privatize education and let people market to the needs of the consumers, just like any other service industry does.

Haha yeah, any school that doesn’t demand you worship Jesus is definitely a liberal indoctrination camp.

People who send their kids to private school are more affluent, they clearly care about their kids’ education, the schools themselves can afford to pay the best teachers, are more likely to have smarter kids etc. It’s these factors, and not the forced religion, that makes private schools come out ahead. You seem to think that if you just start forcing a mandatory state religion down someone’s throat, you’ll somehow carry over all these advantages, and there’s no reason to think so. Teaching kids falsehoods from the beginning is not a way to improve education, and if you just introduced religious education into all schools without all of the other advantages, you wouldn’t do anything to improve the situation.

I’m not the one going off on tangents, here, guy…

I just point out the double standard. If you are going to rip Bachmann for making mistakes, then, yeah, the other guy is making mistakes, too.

If you are going to claim “He is going to mop the floor with Bachmann”, the obvious response is “not with that record.”

Okay, Bachmann- The thing is, she’s a lot closer to the mainstream than you guys think.

Frankly, I’d be concerned if she were the nominee, because I don’t think 4 years in Congress is enough experience to do the job. (And I had the exact same opinion when “He who Shall Not Be Named” was running and only had three years in Congress compared to the guy who had been there for 25.) I think she also represents the party’s fringe, but frankly, our whole system is really based on getting fringe candidates, because it’s the fringe voter who shows up for primaries.

Look I went to catholic school in Chicago as well.. (Ignatius if you were wondering) and if you want to inflict fiction on your child then either send them to Loyola or another church related school. YOU have that choice.. And we also have a choice as to whether we medicate our kids. My son was diagnosed with a mild form of Asperger’s when he was in first grade. My EX and I disagreed on somethings.. but not medicating the boy was not one of them. With time.. assistance and dedication it only shows up slightly socially.
As for religion class.. i enjoyed it with Sister Budesky.. great tales of a far off land. But when we signed up for Ignatius we kind of acknowledged that aspect. You go fooling around with religion in public schools then you’ll have the pentacostals fighting with the seventh day adventist ticking off the Jehovah Witnesses.. THATS EXACTLY what a teacher needs to deal with..
