Bad Guys only.

Brian Dennehy, perhaps? Haven’t seen him in much, but can’t imagine him being, you know, nice.

Well, heck, he’s a NICE alien in Cocoon.

Come on…Tommy Boy!!!

Nice, and yet subtly menacing, too.

Did Christopher Lee ever play a good guy?

He must have. He’s made like a million movies, he must have. But you know what? Can’t think of one.
David Warner is the ultimate movie bad guy, and I can prove it. He was the villain in Time Bandits and Tron; the assistant villain (to Billy Zane) in Titanic; and I don’t kow how many others.
David Warner played a Grail seeker on an episode of Babylon 5. Gentle, kind, caring, compassionate (and rather kickass).
Miguel Ferrer. Is this guy even capable of playing someone who’s not an amoral prick?
He was the head of the coroner’s office on Crossing Jordan, and was generally a nice guy.

I was going to suggest Jack Elam as a Bad Guy Only, but IMDB claims he also played “grizzled sidekicks”, so maybe not him.

What about Christopher Lee? Isn’t he sort of the archetypal bad guy?

shakes fist at previous posters, whom she’d name if the preview actually showed the rest of the thread, which it apparently doesn’t anymore. shakes fist at the lack of thread preview, for good measure

Doesn’t he play the head of the Medical Examiner’s office on “Crossing Jordan?”

ETA: Beaten to the punch.
I don’t watch nearly enough movies to run with this crowd, but I’m going to throw out the I’ve never heard of Frank Langella playing anyone other than the heavy, ever since I first saw him in Dracula back in '79.
Can anyone enlighten me otherwise?
I know you’ve been enlightened already, but I didn’t notice anyone mention that he starred in a TV remake of The Mark of Zorro in the Tyrone Power role. He was really good in it.

Turns out that was well before '79. Damn, I’m old.

How about Jeremy Irons? I’d check IMDb, but the only movies I know of his, he’s the villain, so I wouldn’t know what role he plays in the movies I haven’t seen.
And he’s not evil in Clue.
Well, he is and he isn’t (and he isn’t, and he is but only in the photonovel).

Dammit, I can’t win! I’ve never even heard of Crossing Jordan!

Well, if I can’t have one, nobody can:

Christopher Lee was a straight-up good guy in Hound of the Baskervilles and The Devil Rides Out, both Hammer films. He was also a good guy in Circle of Iron although only in the sense that he didn’t do anything bad. Very gentle and courteous.

Jeremy Irons was a good guy in Kafka, playing the title role.
Alan Rickman might not always play the bad guy, but you forget that he doesn’t 'cause he’s so good at it.
Dude was the Voice of God. I think that’s a Good Guy, by definition.
Brad Dourif?
I’ve got him as Chucky, Piter de Vries and Grima Wormtongue.

Billy (the stuttering kid) in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Probably the least villainous character in the film.

Depends upon whom is doing the defining.

The doctor on Deadwood.

Billy Zane was a good guy in Memphis Belle. Gary Oldman was good (for the most part) in Romeo Is Bleeding and Walken started his career playing good guys with horrible luck in The Deer Hunter and The Dead Zone.
Christopher Walken’s played a number of “good guy” roles, such as in Who Am I This Time? with Susan Sarandon, Brainstorm with Natalie Wood, The Dead Zone, Blast From The Past, Scotland, PA, Catch Me If You Can and Hairspray, among others. It’s been so long since I’ve seen Pennies From Heaven, I can’t remember if he was a good guy in that. He sure was a great dancer, which is what I mainly remember.
Nope, he was a pimp. Evil and amoral is pretty much the job description. His dancing to “Let’s Misbehave” was to recruit Bernadette Peters into his stable.

Al Lettieri was always a favorite bad guy actor. And for cheesier tastes, there’s Heny Silva.

Ian McShane may be falling into this category, and he’s so awesome I hope he doesn’t get pigeon-holed. crosses fingers

Oh, thnk you SO much for posting that - that was amazing! I never got round to seeing the American version of *Pennies From Heaven * because I’d heard such poor reviews (Pauline Kael excepted) and I didn’t want to fond memories of the orignal. But now I really must see this.
