OK, it has probably been done before, but I haven’t seen it recently. Following some input [from this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=71298&pagenumber=1), it seems that liking bad movies is very common here. Nothing to be ashamed, I like them myself, now I would like to know which ones you like and why (notice I said _bad_ movies, not _awful_ ones, you know, the ones you can’t even watch on fast forward ?).

Let’s the games start, _à tout seigneur, tout honneur_ I’ll start with the three I listed before, _Godzilla, Armageddon and Starship Troopers_. These three big budgets abortion-wannabe are dream movies for nitpickers like myself, for example in _Godzilla_, the military tactics are abysmal (three subs in NY harbour, one of them a boomer ?). Come on guys, these attack choppers are firing air-to-air missiles at a ground target, of that size ? Where are the anti-tank missiles ? Also, note to the filmmakers : helicopters operate in **three** dimensions, if you’re pursued by a ground target, **CLIMB**! And that is saying nothing of recycled scenes, you know, I remember how that tank flipped over earlier in the movie, you didn’t have to show it again, I don’t have Alzheimer.

_Armageddon_, aaah, what nitpicks should we ignore ? The fact that Mir would fall apart if spin-induced gravity was produced ? Or, how about a simullaunch, with the shuttles so close that when the tanks are dropped, it’s just luck that they didn’t hit each other ? Or, one [count it folks, one) nuke (no yield mentioned) to split the asteroid ? Face it, if you know your stuff, it becomes a great comedy/game of “Spot the Nitpick !”

_Starship Troopers_ turn, now. First of all I want to say that I consider that Mr Heinlein’s story was raped. For a military SF story, the military aspect was also abysmal (D-Day type invasion ? Corded starships in orbit ?). I haven’t watched it in a while (yes, I own all three of these movies, among others), so my nitpicking doesn’t come to mind as readily, but I think that the main problem with that movie is that the treatment was done by a Continental European (sorry, Coldy, no offence meant) with a Continental European view of the military (hence, the Nazi symbology), while the book was written by an American with an American view on the subject.

It may sound negative, but I **do** like these movies, every time I watch them, I find something new they got wrong. Details, man, details, you’ve got to pay attention to them.

So, which movies do YOU love to hate ?

Put me down for “StarshipTroopers” as well. I also like “Road House”- an old 80’s flick with Patrick Swayze.

What do these movies have in common? A little sex, a lot of violence, plenty of moronic dialogue and bad acting, and they both take themselves very, _very_ seriously.

Oh, and **detop**? You have WAY too much time to think. Find someone to give you a good rodgering.

Earth Girls Are Easy----Geena Davis,Julie Brown, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans in 80’s LA.

I don’t remember it being a musical, but I remember laughing my ass off watching that “Earth girls are easy” thing 😃

Oh, and I like Starship Troopers too.

Not to mention low budget stuff like “Braindead” and “Bad Taste” 😃

OK, Morrison’s Lament, the OP said “bad” movies, not just low budget. I’m terribly sorry but you cannot list anything by Peter Jackson in a thread about bad movies. You just can’t. Carry on.

Anyone remember “Krull”? I saw it in the Columbia House DVD catalog yesterday. I’m horribly tempted to actually purchase it.
“Real Genius”

I’ll think of more, later.

Like _Road House_ also, but mostly for the Jeff Healey Band. Oh BTW, did you spot Leeta (sp. ?) from B5 in it ?

And as for your suggestion, I find that I have the opposite problem, I have too LITTLE time ! 😉

Personally, I love _Kentucky Fried Movie_. I know one, count them, _one_ other person who likes this film. We invited friends over for a _Kentucky Fried Movie_ fest one night and had a blast, but I don’t think anyone else laughed more than once. My wife still “can’t believe that I forced her to watch that movie.”

I adore _Showgirls_! How can you not love Nomi “I’m not a whore” Malone’s desperate struggle to star in a cheesy Vegas revue? Elizabeth Berkeley is so bad playing Nomi. Gina Gershon is deliciously slutty and evil. And who deosn’t love the dialogue? “I’m erect, why aren’t you erect?” “I got a problem with pussy” and so on.

I really liked _Escape From LA_. Sure, that surfing scene was ludicrous, the acting was shit, and just the premise was silly (yeah… the country tolerates a fundamentalist Christian declaring himself President-for-life…). But hey, I thought the technology was amazingly kickass… what better excuse to get a guy into a floor-length trench coat than to apply it as armoring? And I loved the design for the helicopter, even if it did violate spacial mechanics (hey, so did the _Falcon_ in Star Wars, okay?). And, finally, I thought that the ending was really cool, even if everyone saw it coming a mile away.

I thought _Cutthroat Island_ was spiffy, even if it was pathetically campy. Not “amusing”-campy, “holy shit, they spent 160 million on THIS?”-campy. The plot was standard “Arrr, matey” Pirates stuff. And, hell, the idea of pirates carrying rocket launchers back in the 1800s is ridiculous beyond words… but the big battle at the end made the stuff at the beginning worth it.

Other movies I liked but don’t wanna bother commenting on: _Kull The Conqueror_, _Robocop II_, _Predator II_, _Super Mario Brothers_ (that horrendous piece of tripe with the techno-grimey Mushroom Kingdom), _Alien3_, _Critters_, _Critters II_, _Gremlins_, and _Gremlins II_.

Remember that weepy **Dying Young**? That was pretty shite. Yet I gravitate towards the telly whenever it’s on.

**Grease 2** was pretty bad. It wasn’t as cool as the first one but it had a singing Michelle Pfeiffer and a swoony Maxwell Caulfield.

**Xanadu** was one big pink roller-palooza, but ELO and ONJ simply _rock_.

**AlbertRose** mentioned **Streets of Fire**. Oh, that’s a classic. I watch it mostly for the big Jim Steinman numbers and Willem Dafoe in his leather apron.

Okay, confession time: I _loved_ “Armageddon,” except that I find the animal crackers scene nigh unwatchable. The rest? Entertaining-as-hell cheese, to the nth power. We own it. On DVD, baybee. And if that’s wrong, I don’t wanna be right.

ID4. Aw, yeah. Aliens and good guys and bad guys and of COURSE the dog doesn’t die. And I won’t bother picking this apart because it’s just too easy. The only part I can’t watch is President Bill Pullman’s (!) speech…“Today we celebrate-” \<horns crescendo, roll on tympani\> “-our INDEPENDENCE DAY!” \<horns climax, percussionist collapses on his kit, trumpet players vomit\> Phthtooie.

“Can’t Hardly Wait.” Derivative teen end-of-school-what-are-we-going-to-do-with-the-rest-of-our-lives claptrap horseshit, but every time I pass it I watch. Ethan Embry is so cute. Not in that “He’s going to leave Hollywood and find me and be my boyfriend” cute, but “awwww, lookit the puppy!” cute.

And…almost anything by Full Moon Entertainment. Arena. Scanners. Aw, yeah. I think Scanners 4 (?) is the best…when Jack Deth goes to defeat the medeival psychic vampires…give me a big bowl of carbohydrate-laden popcorn and DOWN IN FRONT.

_The Kentucky Fried Movie_

Dr Klahn: Ah… and now for our American friend…

Some good bad movies:

Big Trouble in Little China - Nouf said

Point Break - Keanu Reeves as former college football star turned FBI agent Johnny Utah.

The Quick and The Dead - What do you get when you mix acting legends Sharon Stone, Gene Hackmen, Russell Crow, and Leonardo DeCaprio; a supporting cast featuring Lance Henriksen (Aliens, Millenium) and Gary Sinise; and the producer/director of the Evil Dead movies, Hercules, and Xena (Sam Raimi)? A really bad, yet really entertaining western.

Blade - Good ass-kicking vampire movie.

They Live! - For some reason, Rowdy Roddy Piper is the only wrestler turned movie star I enjoy watching.

The **Kentucky Fried Movie** is not a bad movie. It is hysterically funny and is at this point, a time capsule of what was going on in entertainment circa the mid 1970’s.

_Armageddon, ID4 and Scanners_ ? I Think I’m in love 🙂

Two more, _One Million Years B.C._, if Raquel Welch was the typical cave woman, I think we’ve devolved, come on, shaved legs, perfect hairdo and make-up ? (although Harryhausen’s dinosaurs were cool).

The 1986 version of _King Solomon’s Mines_ with Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone. Hilarious, first the music is a not too subtle rip-off of the Indiana Jones theme, then when RC is dragged by the train, what was he wearing ? a stainless steel jockstrap ? Then we go to the aerial dogfight scene, excuse me Mr Director, but… that movie is set in pre-WWI Africa, so how come the airplanes have synchronized machine guns ? And let’s not talk about the cannibal pot with all the (floating !) plastic vegetables in it.

I do believe you’re thinking of **Trancers**. Jack Deth is pretty cool, though. “You’re knocking on death’s door, pal, and I’ve got the key!” Scanners is also good, though.

Others:

Riki-Oh: Story of Ricky

the Godzilla films. The _real_ Godzilla, the dude in a rubber suit beating the crap out of other rubber suits.

John Carpenter has a knack for making bad movies I really enjoy. They Live, Prince of Darkness, Big Trouble in Little China. I always thought In the Mouth of Madness is underappreciated. (Vampires was a disappointment, however.)
