> The molasses, ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce are all acidic. If you add all those ingredients at the start, the beans will never get soft. As the recipe says, if you’re starting with dry beans you should cook them first, then add the flavorings.

> BTW, the formatting of that web page is horrible. The actual recipe is at the bottom. Before that is a bunch of text and pictures that look sort of like a recipe, but include only enough detail to get a novice cook in trouble. And the instructions for dried beans are all the way at the end, where they’re easy to miss until it’s too late.

That seems to be the format of many recipe web pages now. You have to scroll all the way down to get to the actual recipe. It’s so prevalent there’s actually a Chrome plug-in called [“Recipe Filter”](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/recipe-filter/ahlcdjbkdaegmljnnncfnhiioiadakae?hl=en) that just pops up the recipe when you get to one of these webpages with that type of formatting. I just checked, and it works fine on the OP’s site. Recipe pops right up when you go to the web page.

God, I hate that.

I think it can be traced back to the **Smitten Kitchen** people, who decided you should know about their entire lives, where they learned this dish, what their cats and dogs are up to, etc. Not so much, just show me how to make the damn banana bread.

Thank you so much! I can’t stand the websites like that. This works great!

Yeah, it is great. I just learned about it a few months ago from another poster here on the SDMB. Lemme look it up. Oh, credit to **NotherYinzer** from [this thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=887077) complaining about exactly that type of recipe web page.

Revisiting that thread was a treat. Ha ha, “serve it to ‘guests,’” remember way back in December, before the Trump Plague?
