Not being nitpicky here, but were Walter, Martha and Ralph really _popular_ names? I guess they must have been before my time (born in mid-60s) if they were. 😛

Depends on the definition of _popular_ I suppose. In the 1950s Walter and Ralph were number 40 and 52 respectively for boys and Martha was number 32 for girls. ([Cite](http://www.babycenter.com/0_100-most-popular-baby-names-of-1950_1738074.bc)). None broke the [Top 100 for 2010](http://www.babycenter.com/top-baby-names-2010), so they were definitely more popular then than now.

I found an interesting [site](http://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/) that lets you plot name popularity by year (it starts in 1879 and runs up to 2009).

If you search Walter, you’ll find it was a very popular name in the early part of the twentieth century. In 1914, it even cracked the top ten. Its popularity started a long decline in the forties but it didn’t fall out of the top hundred until 1973. But it kept falling and by now it’s approaching the four hundreds.

(Hijack) Some of the names in 2009’s top 100 (particularly for girls) are really nauseating.
