3. “The Ride of the Valkyries”

Used in _Birth of a Nation_, _Apocalypse Now_, and the Vietnam scenes of _Watchmen_. And in a case of [truth in television](http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TruthInTelevision), there actually were German units in WWII that blasted Wagner over loudspeakers as they attacked.

3. “The Ride of the Valkyries”
4. “Paint it black”/Rolling Stones

Thanks to [this article](http://www.pophistorydig.com/?tag=paint-it-black-in-movies) I was able to confirm that it is at least topical for the list. I knew it had been used in the Tour of Duty TV show but wasn’t sure if my recollection of Full Metal Jacket was correct. Also gobsmacked that the Stones lost the rights to it many years ago.

5. La Vie En Rose/Edith Piaf (World War 2)

A funny thing about this one is it doesn’t matter where the WW2 is set: it was playing in a Nazi office in _X Men 2_, it was the only record that survived a village’s destruction in _Saving Private Ryan_, it played in Italy in a scene of the miniseries _War and Remembrance_; I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s made its way into some War in the Pacific movies.

> "O Fortuna" is a movement in Carl Orff's 1935–36 cantata Carmina Burana. It begins the opening and closing sections, both titled "Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi". The cantata is based on a medieval Goliardic poetry collection of the same name, from which the poem "O Fortuna" provides the words sung in the movement. It was well-received during its time, and entered popular culture through use in other musical works, advertisements, and soundtracks beginning in the late 20th century.
