[First Star Wars Action Figures](http://actionfiguresbuff-jon.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/star-wars-kenner-first-action-figures-line.jpg) This was a huge deal in 1977. There were a lot of studio execs who thought _Star Wars_ was going to tank and so there was hardly any merchandising when it came out other than the novelization and maybe a couple of T-shirts. The action figures didn’t come out until months later and originally it was a packet you bought that had _vouchers_ for them. IIRC the first four to be released (the ones you got for the vouchers) were R2D2, C3PO, Luke, and Ben Kenobi, and then they released the others shown above. Very soon of course it was no big deal: you could buy them at any store and even some grocery stores, and by the time _Empire_ came out the stores were glutted with merchandise for it. Today of course I think you can get action figures of the key grips and lighting directors and I doubt there’s a scene from any of the movies you can’t completely replicate with the action figures and sets and other toys. In 1977/early 1978, however, if you had one of these original action figures you could trade it for anything you wanted. ---
