Baldur's Gate 3! {finally Released August 3rd, 2023}

But if you’re anything like me you’ll remember Bleak Falls Barrow in detail until the day you die!

No, it’s not grid-based like the old classics such as Pool of Radiance, but when you are doing movement (of any kind, including walking, jumping, dashing, etc.) when you are putting your cursor toward where you want your character to go it puts an arrow between the character and that spot with a measurement above it. It will warn you if you are trying to go too far.

So, while it’s not like playing the game on a square or hex grid map as a typical tabletop game does, it’s like playing a wargame (the precursor to and inspiration for D&D), where you’d use a ruler or measuring tape to figure out how far units can go.

It keeps things mechanically the same, while feeling more organic and realistic. That’s how most of the recent games in this genre handle it.

Downloading now SO EXCITED

I have to wait until I get home from my son’s therapy to download it. Then I have to do work. I don’t get to play until tomorrow. Womp.

Me too, set it downloading! I may get an hour or so to play on my lunch, but the main event starts this evening once I put the kid to bed.

Me too.

Says 1 hour 20 minutes.

Trying to get work done fast today. Honestly, I can’t get all work done before the download is done but I think I might be able to duck out a tiny bit early this one time…maybe. (FTR I will make sure my work is done and done well.)

I’m a tiny bit worried: I started the download exactly at 11:00. If their servers are like a minute behind mine, I might be downloading the EA version, which would be super-boo.

I waited till a tiny bit after and went to the Store Page to be sure it was not listing as Early Access (which it was not). I’d be super bummed if this was an Early Access download.

Is it 70 gb or 100?

This is probably going to be different than any RPG I have ever played. I don’t think I’ve played one this specific to D&D. I’m excited but also nervous.

97.69 gb

That’s the release version. 97GB download. 122 on disk size.

Yay, and clicking play now!

About a year ago I downgraded my internet speed. I just didn’t need to pay for absolute top tier gigabit speed for what I was using it for. I truly haven’t noticed any drop in quality with most everything. It’s still plenty fast mind you, just not the absolute tip-top like it used to be.

This is about the only time I ever regret it. The very slightly delayed gratification of having to wait for a massive downloaded game :grinning:. About 7 GB to go…

Gotta be honest, I expected at least some issues with the download. That went flawlessly though, see you all in several hours when I come up for air.

I, too, downgraded a bit from the very fastest speeds but it is still fast at over 150 Mbps. Yeah, times like this I wish I had faster but the difference is only a few minutes. I think my total download was something like 1h20m (give or take a few minutes). I grew up with dial-up modems. I can live with that.

I had some lunch and see my download is done. Catch you all later! (I can’t quite start playing now cuz work but I can’t help but start it for a few minutes and have a look.)

ETA: Starting it the game asks if I want to buy the Digital Deluxe Upgrade. But, I thought, I got the upgrade if I pre-ordered (which I did). Anyone know what’s up with that?

ETA2: I clicked on “Buy Now” and it took me to a Steam page which says I already own it so I guess I am fine. Checked my DLC page and it says it is there.

Their EULA is (kinda) fun to read. Not saying it is worth reading all the way through (even if you should read it all) but neat they even made that better than usual.

I got a message that said “New DLC has been added to your account. It will be downloaded along with the game.” The download speed so far is positively breezy. At this rate it should take 30 minutes.

Too bad I can’t play yet.

I’ve downloaded it, but it wants my graphics driver updated. Such a tease…

Woohoo, downloaded, made my High Elf Paladin, and got through the Prologue on My Lunch(plus a bit more) break.

Perfect and gorgeous as expected so far.
