Baldur's Gate 3! {finally Released August 3rd, 2023}

Really? I never played around with merchant attitude. I did a quick google on my first playthrough and it seemed like people thought it wasn’t worth it.

Apparently it’s based on level? I haven’t used Wyll at all this run, so I should be able to save a lot of gold. Thanks for the tip.

It typically isn’t worth it because the amount you invest (and time) won’t be reflected in the number of things you buy. Dammon is the key exception since you meet him very early and can still have him as a merchant in the end game where he sells some very expensive stuff. The only other potential merchant from all three acts (that I can think of) is Roan the Zenth halfling and she doesn’t sell nearly as interesting stuff.

Between the fact that you usually only encounter most merchants in a single act, and the increasing cost to raise approval as you level, it’s typically a pointless mechanic.

You get more for selling too, although you’d really need to abuse long resting for them to reset their gold stock. Apparently the cheesy thing if just keep a lvl 1 character to get attitude up with a given vendor and sell everything through them.

Apparently Act 3 is completely broken once you hit the main floor of Wyrm Rock fortress. I can’t interact with anything or fast travel. So I guess I’m done with this playthrough until they patch it, but the forums say it’s been over 3 weeks. Lame, and probably a big enough issue that it shouldn’t win any of the game of the year awards people are speculating about.

That sucks. I’m in Act III of my current run and (knock on wood) no notable bugs.

I’m not sure I’d recommend playing BG2 without playing BG1 first, considering how closely tied the stories are.

To the point that there is a mod out there that allows you to play BG1 and BG2 as a single game with everything carrying over seamlessly after you defeat the final boss of BG1.

I have fond memories of the first two BG games but they’re also hazy memories because they were so long ago.

I would second the suggestion to try out Divinity: Original Sin 2. Same company, very similar gameplay, and it’s a great game. It’s often on sale, I got it on sale years ago. It looks like it’s about $15 on either Steam or GOG. You’ll get a lot out of that $15. If BG3 is a bit expensive it’s a great alternative for a quarter of the price.

I’d say if you enjoy D:OS2 you’ll love BG3, which is an improvement in many ways.

One thing that’s missing in D:OS2 is that you can’t make a character from scratch. You have to pick from a list that all have their own premade stories, appearances, and abilities. But you do get to customize them A LOT as they level up, so despite all that, the RPG elements are quite strong.

I think persuasion ranks also play a part, and my bard does have a ton of persuasion.

Makes sense. I always forget that I can use other characters in chats. My main is a bard so he pretty much is the conversation guy.

Kind of surprised that it’s not a suggestion in more threads.

Agreed. I kickstarted both D:OS games. And D:OS2 was one of the best RPGs made, up until BG3.

Also, saying you get to customize them a lot in D:OS2 is an understatement when compared to D:OS1. In D:OS1you were still locked in to some base choices, but you had a lot of room for customization.

In D:OS2, like BG3, you can completely re-spec all characters from scratch if you want to at any point in the game. The only thing you don’t have control over is the back story. (Though, IIRC, it’s more expensive in D:OS2 to do so than in BG3. Because all powers in D:OS2 are bought via books, and I think you have to rebuy books to re-spec. I might be wrong on that, though. It’s been a while.)

So, interesting bug I just encountered.

I’m in Moonrise Towers near the end of the second act where you have the option of releasing or purging the pods. I released and entered the expected combat. (Knowing it was expected, I already took out the brain things because I don’t need even more enemies on the screen.) So combat’s going on in the first round, and one of the friendlies turn comes up. The screen goes black, and then it’s Gale’s turn with nothing apparently done by the friendly. This friendly’s name is Cerys. She’s a level 6 Elturian scout…who’s hanging out at the Last Light Inn.

Ummm…I don’t think she’s gong to be much help in this combat unless she has a Teleport or Gate spell or similar handy.

Another amusing bug.

After defeating the boss of Chapter 2 when the Fist and Harpers have taken over Moonrise, if you decide to go down into the basement and come back up, the (harmless, really) pilgrims of the Absolute from earlier in the chapter have reappeared much to the apparent chagrin of Quartermaster Talli who decides they must be destroyed. They have unlimited rocks and at most 10 hit points. She has a sword and 60 some hit points. Watching her methodically kill them all one by one is amusing. And then she heals herself fully afterward. Meanwhile, the two main gnomes are oblivious while the other two gnomes do the “cowering where they stand because they don’t want to get involved in the fight” thing.

And in the next room over, Dame Aylin, of all people, is also cowering due to the next-door fight.

In the end I reloaded and decided to not check out the basement after all (there’s really nothing down there at this point). I don’t want to risk a scripting bug screwing up something else somewhere else.

Big honkin’ patch including several major improvements people have been asking for:

  • Epilogue: An entirely new section at the end of the game after the defeat of the the Netherbrain that aims to provide a well-deserved sense of closure with your allies.
  • Two new play modes: Honour Mode and Custom Mode.
  • Many performance improvements, particularly in Act III.
  • Added dynamic resolution for PS5.
  • Players playing on machines with low VRAM/RAM should see improved performance.
  • The game is now available in Korean!
  • While at camp, you can now access and manage the inventories of companions who aren’t in your active party.
  • Added a brand new fight in Ramazith’s Tower if you betray Nightsong there.
  • Orin’s outfit now drops as loot and is wearable by anyone. We also gave it a suitably disgusting description and name.

27.61 GB on PS5.

~Heads off to brush up on Korean~

The access to everyone’s inventory is long long overdue. A great addition.

New epilogue? Damnit…guess ill do a third runthrough. Ill do a Giz monk and be whasserfaces beau

Yay, act 3 isn’t completely broken anymore! I can finish this run! They did nerf my throwzerker build though… Which is fine, it was obviously broken.

Hmm, honor mode is interesting. If I was doing another run it was going to be a Durge one. I’ll have to think about that also being honor mode or not.

Ran the epilogue on two of my old runs, a standard hero run and my (non-Dark Urge) Evil Guy run. Unsurprisingly, there’s no epilogue if you dominate the Brain and become the Absolute

I liked it and, while I wasn’t upset with the ending before, I think this should make a lot of people happy. It handled the Evil one a little less satisfactory than the Good one but that’s not surprising.

Evil Gripes

Namely, Minthara and I had supposedly spent the last six months building a power base in Baldur’s Gate to usurp the throne via political guile and assassination, and supposedly created a vast web of alliances and favors. However neither Ascended Vampire Astarion, living in Cazador’s manse, nor High Mother Superior Shadowheart, running the House of Loss and taking in tons of converts in the aftermath of the war, had any idea what I was up to. You don’t even get an option to mention it. These should be two of your strongest points of leverage in the city and they act like you’ve spent the last six months puttering round.

But that’s honestly pretty minor overall and more to illustrate that it’s harder to plan for evil stuff than people who do things for the folk stories.

There’s a small box during the epilogue containing letters from various NPCs, saying what they were up to and sending regrets for not being there. I missed it the first time so thought I’d give a heads up.

Just started chapter 3. The Githyanki ninjas are about to make me quit the game. My biggest gripe about turned based combat is when they throw enemies at you that can fly across the board and hit you 5 times before you have a chance to make a move. It made me walk away from a couple of Final Fantasy games. I get maybe one hit in and they hit me 15 times and I’m dead. There is nothing more frustrating in video games.

Skip the ones in camp entirely and just Dash/Misty Step to the portal and pop in. Then you should only have to fight the one or two near the beginning and the four at the end, but only one or two of those four are a monk.
