Because hyperkalemia can kill you pretty quickly there is a limit to the dosage of over the counter potassium supplements in the US. The RDA for potassium is 3500 mg/day. The largest single tablet potassium supplement available over the counter is 99 mg. If you depend on OTC supplements to fill your potassium needs you’re going to need a lot of pills.

The last two posts also remind me of the time I tried increasing potassium in my diet (which now that I think of it, was three years ago, not four). A good friend of mine was telling me how much he loved sunflower seeds. A big part of the day while he was just sitting around, he’d be munching on them. During a visit to the doctor he was told his blood was showing a high level of potassium, and he was told to take it easy on the sunflower seeds.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses! Sorry it took me so long to get back, but as it turns out, this stuff (hydrochlorothiazide) was making me sick. Not taking it any more, but I’m sure the doc will want to replace it with something else.
