On the digression of hard google searches, I really like their music, but alternative British rock band The Music can eff right off. Especially since their debut album was self-titled.
Chvrches (pronounced ‘churches’) apparently spell their name the way they do because it makes internet searches easier.
Linkin Park was originally “Lincoln Park”, but changed the spelling of their name because www.lincolnpark.com was already taken.
Linkin Park was originally named Hybrid Theory, but another band had that name. But they named their first breakthrough album that name.
After listening to their music for a bit on friday night, my friends and I have come to the conclusion that they might actually be playing death metal *for *eagles, which must have a different auditive range than humans.
Because otherwise, their music is just inexplicably terrible.
The Eagles lost a trademark dispute in 2001 against a non profit Eagle protection society. Perhaps that taught them a lesson?
Until this morning while listening to the radio, I hadn’t heard the name / style of the band that was playing at the tragic event. I kind of like the 30 seconds or so of music I heard. Also, they clearly are not death metal and my first thought was “what a stupid name” and I did not make the same astute observation as Bonaventure. Is that what the band says their name is based upon? It’s funny but at the same time, even if you think the Eagles are pussified or whatever, they were pretty damn big for a pretty long time. Are the EoDM anywhere close to that status within their genre(whatever it may actually be)?
EoDM started as a side project by the hugely respected guitarist and bandleader Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. His closest childhood friend, Jesse Hughes, was at the time in a bad way - recently divorced and other issues. They started the band for fun with Josh on drums, not guitar, but helping Jesse pull the band together, finish songs and get an album out.
To my knowledge, it was a joke / distraction that somehow got enough popularity that Jesse Hughes is still working it after almost a decade. The name was just part of that joke and it doesn’t take long for anyone trying to learn about EoDM to realize that they are a sloppy, strutty, blues-rock band that enables Jesse Hughes to live out some rock n’ roll fantasies.
I’ve liked EoDM for years and never once did I make any sort of connection that '70s band.
FWIW, I think they’re a lot of fun and own several of their CDs. Foot-stomping, booty-shaking, tongue-in-cheek party rock with barely 2 brain cells to rub together. I’ll take these guys any day over that other group.
Well, there are the “Tape-Beatles.”
Another example, “The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash” They had the permission of Cash himself.
I don’t know if they actually got sued, or just a cease and desist order, but the band now known as Speedealer used to be called REO Speedealer.
Heh, I was a longtime friend of one of their singers when they went by that name.
Earlier in the same town, there was once a band named SPAM. Even though they were severely small time, Hormel pestered them. They put periods in it the name, and claimed that it was an acronym, but Hormel’s lawyers weren’t buying it. I don’t know the eventual resolution of the problem. I imagine they stopped being a band before it really became an issue.
