Bands/Artists you like but have never heard on the radio

I found Vallejo’s first disc on a listening station at Tower, and liked it enough to buy it… but I have never heard them even mentioned by anyone else, much less on a radio broadcast.

Now, Zero7 I have heard on the radio. In the wasteland of the Los Angeles FM dial there are a couple of oases that are more fruitful than most any other stations in the US. One is public radio KPFK’s music programs, especially Morning Becomes Eclectic. The other is on KLOS, weekday evenings… Jim Ladd’s Program… he claims to be the last Rock DJ in the US to program his own show every night.

But other than that, LA radio sucks.

‘90% of what I listen to on a regular basis’?

A lot of them get more/any play elsewhere in the world - because a lot of them are not Canadian, or American. A few I might hear more of if I had more radio options (or possibly not). Some I catch on TV - but only on ClipTrip or when another video show is doing a special.

A partial list

PuffyAmiYumi (A lot of TV play, but no radio.)
The Brilliant Green
Molotov
HIM
Cruxshadows
Voltaire
ZONE
Malice Mizer

Self got airplay up here with their single “Cannon” but nothing off the next cd Breakfast With Girls ever was played, which is a damn shame since that CD is great. I bet there are later cds too…If they do have a new cd, there’s still hope. They played “Number One” by Muse about twice when Showbiz came out, and now, years later, they’re playing the singles off the new cd with great frequency.

The Banded Geckos (yes, that’s a real group: http://www.bandedgeckos.com/index2.htm)

Yeah, they had one studio album after Breakfast called Gizmodgery that was recorded using toy instruments only. It’s really awesome. There’s also two downloadable albums on their site. And they have a new album, which should be out now but has been shelved by Dreamworks for the foreseeable future. But that’s really a topic for another rant.

That’s because radio speakers aren’t designed to spray slime and fake blood, and you probably wouldn’t want that happening in your car anyway.

Flogging Molly
Dope
Pantera

Has anyone ever heard the Insane Clown Posse on the radio? Didn’t think so.

I’ve heard Frank Zappa on the radio before. Joe’s Garage gets decent airplay on Rock 101, Vancouver.

I have heard ICP on the radio and MTV. Pantera gets good airplay here in Texas. I can’t figure out why HIM or CKY don’t get airplay?

Thank you muchly! I’ve been here about a year but I’m still new - I’ll give KEXP a listen to. Sounds like my kind of station!

I’ve heard them on the radio quite a bit. Star’s End on WXPN. Of course, it’s on an ambient radio program and not a mainstream station.

I haven’t heard Mr. Bungle or Man or Astroman? on the radio and I don’t think either has had a top song.

Gene Clark
Biff Rose
Pavlovs Dog
Zoot Money
Jason Crest
Zachary Thaks

I heard Mary Prankster on the radion once and only once. Glad I did, though, I’ve got all her albums. I’ve heard Dope on the radio, it didn’t sound like their first album, so I didn’t buy it.

(coding fixed)

Thanks for the plug, TM. Zappa used to be a staple of my old show, which has since been cancelled.

While I’m at it, I’ll give another plug for college radio. This is where you’ll find the offbeat, the different, the non-commercial, and stuff that’s usually a hell of a lot better than what the commercial labels hand out. The staff generally volunteers their services and time, and these stations are worth your support.

A lot of the names mentioned here can be heard on the world cafe, a syndicated radio program produced by WXPN in Philadelphia.

The web site has ‘playlists’ and ‘find a station’ links. Except for the heavy metal fans, it’s worth a look and listen.

They’ve been playing “Join me” by HIM on the radio here lately. It surprised the hell out of me… I downloaded an X-Files video with that song in it in 2001, so I sure didn’t expect it to become popular for a while 3 years later.

Too bad you didn’t live out here. Jonathan Chance hired her to sing at his summer party last year (for all the local Dopers and his miscellaneous friends). Alas, he’s moved away, so I can no longer attend his great summer and Halloween parties.
