But they don’t play that kind of music, and if they did, no-one would listen to them. So it is obvious that they’re not the worst kind of Death Metal but something else entirely.

That’s what I came to post.
On the other hand, Trans-Siberian Orchestra \*is \*a metal band.

‘Mighty-Mighty BossTones’. Sounds like a 40’s swing band.

I always hoped that Echo and the Bunnymen would be a reggae band, but no.

When I was a kid, my brother and I would scare each other with my Dad’s Grateful Dead album (Skulls & Roses), and then one day we put it on, and things were never the same.

I remember during the Tipper Gore scare, CNN did a story about “satanic influence” of bands like The Grateful Dead, which amused us.

Hey, [the friend of the devil was a friend of theirs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XacvydVrhuI). Plus skull covers, satanism q. e. d.

Lollipop Shoppe. The name sounds like they should have been a sunshine pop band, like Peppermint Trolley Company, or, well, The Sunshine Company. What they played was rough, moody, sometimes dark psychedelic garage rock. They are best remembered for their cult classic non-hit “You Must Be a Witch”. Definitely worth checking out.

I agree with the Grateful Dead. It was much harder to listen to new music in the 90s, they didn’t play the Grateful Dead on the radio, and a CD cost ~$20 which is a fortune to a kid, so you had to really want the CD to buy it. Anyway, in high school I got one of those Columbia House memberships where you pay 97 cents for 8 CDs and then agree to buy one a month at regular price for however many months, and one of the eight CDs I picked was _What A Long Strange Trip It’s Been_, which is all black with a skeleton and Gothic red lettering, and looks pretty hardcore to judge by the cover. I expected something heavy, maybe not Pantera heavy, but at least Black Sabbath heavy.

Honestly, I liked them way more than I expected to (it’s still one of my favorite albums), but all my friends, even people who I knew had dancing bear posters in their room, liked them a lot less than they had expected. I’m proud to be the guy to introduce all my friends to the Grateful Dead. I remember one girl listening to them in my room for the first time, said, in utter shock and horror, “this… this is _country_!”. 🙂

Heh. Little Baader Meinhof going on. Sitting at a bar right now and the the guitarist/one-man band kind of guy performing today just introduced a cover of the Old 97s.

I’m stealing that.

Little River Band sounds like a jug band at a barn dance.

Weren’t they more of a rock-opera thingie with about 4,317 musicians? Sure, their core had two former members of the somewhat glam-metally Savatage, but I always thought TSO was more of an epic rock extravaganza that probably required about 805 semis to transport all their touring stuff.

“Squirrel Nut Zippers” is a kind of candy regionally popular/available in the south (The band is from North Carolina, as I recall). It tastes a lot like “Bit o’ Honey.”
