Bands where the drummer was seen as the weak link

Not well known here in the US, but Marillion’s original drummer, Mick Pointer. Not that he was bad;he was serviceable; but it became apparent that his at-the-time limited style was going to hold back the band since it was heading in a more complex prog direction. Sad part was he started the band and was “let go”, to be replaced by the excellent Ian Mosely. Pointer moved into and thrived in a more prog-metal oriented band, Arena, and his skills seemed to improve at the same time. Worked out for both sides of the aisle.

I saw a documentary a few years ago where a producer (or manager or someone else) observed that Keith Moon was always trying to play with the vocals and paid virtually no attention to Entwistle’s bass lines. I’m not enough of a musician to be able to verify this, but it also sounded like this was an ongoing problem that they would have to address during recording.

“Keith…you’re drumming for Roger AGAIN.”

She seemed very personable on the VU documentary I watched recently. However, if you’re not on the right end of the political spectrum you’d probably want to avoid talking politics. She’s apparently in the “Obama is a socialist” crowd.

True. As I implied earlier, I can quite easily picture her as my GF’s mother (or grandmother) puttering around the house and telling us to have a good time on our date. Then my GF tells me that she’s got to get home early because her mom is leaving town for a concert.

“Oh. Who is she seeing?”

“Nobody. She’s playing.”

“Playing WHAT?”

“With Velvet Underground.”

“Wait…she’s THAT Maureen Tucker?!?”
