Bands with inexplicably dedicated fanbases

Slightly left of centre, but Neil Young. The guy did so much to push fans away in the early 70’s the entire 1980’s. Even in the late 90’s, after he was “back” he still threw out the odd half arsed album. But his fanbase is still huge and still loves him.

mm

Dammit, I was gonna say that. I have a friend who considers herself a big Toadies fan and couldn’t get tickets to a two night stand at Stubb’s. My mind was blown.

I’m blown away by the Sister Hazel thing as well. I lived in Gainesville for seven years and I thought Pat Dooley was the only remaining Sister Hazel fan.

Rush was the first band I thought of when I saw the thread title. I’m only aware of this phenomenon because of this message board. (Although I did know a girl with a Rush tattoo.) There’s a certain group of posters who get very excited every time Rush puts out an album, goes on tour, goes into the studio, is rumored to go into the studio, etc. It all seems pretty crazy for a band that’s almost forty years old. Especially when that band is… Rush.

Slightly OT, but are you THE Howie Reynolds, an older gentleman who used to hang out with Less Than Jake and perform crazy stunts on stage with them at their Gainesville shows?

To be honest, I still think that Rubberneck is an incredible record - it was like a southern-fried version of the Pixies. If the band hadn’t waited so ridiculously long to release the followup - when did it finally come out, 2002 or something completely insane like that? - they could have been one of the big ones of the nineties.

I swear I’m not making this up: Insane Clown Posse used to party in my apartment. It used to be leased to a few of their roadies, and according to the neighbors, the band members more-or-less lived here as well, although they weren’t on the lease. If the condition of my hardwood floors* is any indication, they themselves are either subhuman, or they throw REALLY good parties.

*Seriously, every single step is a creaking nightmare, except in the bathroom (tile) and the pantry (small and well supported, I guess). Some people have nightingale steps, I have an entire nightingale apartment. There are a few spots in the dining room where you can feel the floorboards sink, and a couple outright holes. None of the other units are this bad. It’s the only flaw in an otherwise faboo flat.

Hmm. Sounds not unlike a general description of one of my very favorite bands of all times, the Geraldine Fibbers. Will have to check them out.

Chalk me up with that. I’m part of the cohort that pushed them to #3 this week. And I’ve got tix to see them near Cleveland in a month or so. I’ve seen them every tour, usually multiple times, since 1982. They’re a great band that’s never tried to rest on a single sound. And hell, they’re smarter than the average bear, that’s what keeps them moving.

I will say, though, that Rush is a little different from others mentioned here. While the fanbase is loyal and dedicated for all of these bands most of them tour smaller club-level places in the 1000-2000 range. Rush’s summer tour is playing sheds in the 15000-25000 range and they’ll probably play to more than a million people over the course of the North American dates and then head for Europe.

Other notes: Big Country, with their album ‘In a Big Country’ featuring their monster hit ‘In a Big Country’ goes back to the early 80s. I didn’t know Stuart Adamson was dead. Huh.

Tahssa - Welcome to the cult of Cowboy Mouth. I’ll send you a membership kit complete with red spoon as soon as possible. Now go see them. YouTube doesn’t really capture what they’re all about. Go forth and learn some joy. Isn’t it great to be alive?

As Jonathan Chance said their heyday was way more than 10 years ago. You amaze me that people still remember them. They did have a very distinctive sound though which might explain it.

I do remember hearing a couple of years back that their lead singer had died.

First band that came to mind for me was Moxy Früvous. They had a rabid fan base in Buffalo, which seems unusual considering they were from Toronto.

There’s also the Scintas; a cheesy wedding/telethon band from Buffalo that for some reason somehow draws HUGE crowds in Vegas.

I love them, but discovered them after they apparently broke up. So witty and talented!

I hate dishonesty. I hate disease. I hate prejudice and false pride. I hate Nazis and racists and trans fats (though I love fat trans  ). But I would take all of the above to a desert island with me–naked and slathered in honey and hotsauce–before I would ever subject myself to another second of Moxy Fruvous.

Cowboy Mouth blows chunks!

Sorry. It’s become de rigueur at this point.

And ne’er the twain shall meet.

<snipped>

For a long time I’ve believed that this lack of understanding is what MAKES a lot of fans so rabidly dedicated and obsessive.

Nothing I’ve read in this thread has caused me to doubt my theory.

(No offense intended; I think music appreciation is much too subjective to judge anyone else’s taste.)
