The Melvins.

A few months ago I saw the Melvins play in Philly with the Folk Implosion (yes, really), and I wanted to set fire to most of the people in the audience.

As well as the fact I’m glad it looks like the band members have chosen life, over the perpetual ‘war against sleep’ which they lived through in the early eighties, their last few records have been close to perfect, as against their earlier work, which was often hit or miss, or at best, interesting rather than brilliant.

Yeah, i totally agree with you Henry. Eventhough i enjoy the entire **EN** catalogue, i always see “old-school” fans ragging on the later EN albums, claiming that they sold out, went commercial, forgot their roots…etc. They seem to miss the fact that EN has always been about progression and experimentation, which implies they you don’t always do the same “bang on metal” gimmic on every album just to satisify the elitist fans. EN has truly progressed as a band, and show that not only can they produce the anti-thesis of melody, but they can also create the most beautifull compositions of our time.

Wait…wait…wait a second…people take The Smiths seriously?! Holy crap, and here i was thinkin that every god damn Smiths song was about the most sarcastic and witty composition since Foetus came to be. I mean…common, how can anyone take this line seriously…“I just found out that, somne girls are bigger then others, some girls are bigger then others…” 🙂

I tend to agree with this sentiment, and I think I fall into the same boat of being too old when it came out, even if I was only 19. It seemed to me that while Nevermind sounded nice and, technically, fresh compared to what else was coming out then from majors, it just was something of a novely record. I mean, to me the Pixies and Jane’s Addiction did more into getting me into louder, crunchier rock. And I think they were simply better artists and songwriters. So while I could appreciate what Nirvana did, it wasn’t as revolutionary as we are led to believe by the Rock & Roll Cognoscenti, and when their next album came out I was easily able to go without purchasing it. And in relation to the OP, when all the people went along spreading the gospel of Nirvana as rock & roll messiah while I just felt they were enjoyable, I think that counts. Except I never fell in love with Nirvana, so I probably sound like a holier-than-thou prig.

There really haven’t been a lot of people who do nothing but follow Phish around for some time, if ever. They generally only tour for three or four months out of the year, so people have to be doing something with the rest of the time. (They don’t necessarily have to be doing anything of substance.) Of course, they haven’t played a show at all in just over a year, being on hiatus and all.

I did a week of the tour last summer. The random group I ended up camping with at Deer Creek included another medical student (along with my friend Kevin and I, that made three), a physical therapist, a Dell engineer, a librarian, and two journalism students. Most of the people on tour are people with lives who happen to be on vacation.

It actually surprised me, too.

Billy Joel. I don’t **love** his music, but I like a good amount of it. In high school, however, every class was filled with girls who would all start singing (off-key, of course) whenever a teacher mentioned something that BJ had included in “We didn’t start the fire”.

R.E.M. I’d probably be neutral toward these guys had I not lost a lot of good friends to high school drama clubs, where they all started worshipping Michael Stipe as the be-all and end-all of philosophical thought.

In case you couldn’t tell, I went to high school in the late 80’s.

I think the deal with Nirvana is the same one with the Sex Pistols. Neither one was the actual genesis of its genre, but for some reason or another, it was the one that broke it out and got the mainstream attention, thereby causing something of a pop music revolution.

BTW, AIC certainly is not a “child” of Nirvana. I can clearly remember hearing “Man in the Box” before I’d ever heard of Nirvana. Right?

Although, I have often bemoaned the mumbling that passes for singing in the post-Nirvana era. It’s not very fun to sing along with in the car.

Originally, the term “Floodie” referred to someone who owned Flood and ONLY Flood and was apparently unaware that there were other TMBG albums besides Flood. That breed of fan pretty much died out around 1993, and the term has since been–unfairly–expanded to include fans whose first exposure to Them was through Flood.

Even many members of the insular and cliqueish alt.music.tmbg universe feel the expansion of “Floodie” is terribly unfair to those who came late to the party. There’s no denying that Flood is Their most popular album and that most people out for a first TMBG experience will purchase it because they’ve heard of “Particle Man,” “Istanbul,” and maybe “Birdhouse.” Some purchasers move on to experience other albums and concerts. Others listen a few times, check out the rest of the catalog, and then sell it all to used CD stores. The remainder might be called Floodies.

TMBG fans are by and large a good bunch…I wouldn’t be so quick to defend them if they weren’t. Give us another try. 🙂

I’ll have to second a few fine choices already discussed:

Dave Matthews - How they became an official frat band is beyond me. I know people who have never listened to a DMB album, but hate them nonetheless simply due to the type of fanbase associated with them.

Tool: I won’t comment on crazy earlier comments indicating that they peaked with Undertow, however their fans are pretty irritating. Luckily, the band addressed this on their own with the magnum opus “Hooker with a Penis”.

I have to ditto this. I don’t know if anyone here knows this, but I LOVE Rammstein. And I can just barely stand being around some Rammstein fans. Interestingly, older Rammstein fans (and I mean in age, not history of the band) are more tolerable, but all the angst ridden mosh pit goth teens I see at the shows are beyond the pale.

And yes, they attract a strange number of facists, and I’m not sure what it’s going to take for them to shake this group of wackos. And don’t say “they can come right out and say they aren’t facists”, because they’ve done it. A hundred times.

Most Rammstein fans have a very low humor level, they won’t tolerate criticism of the band (which got me on the ‘fanclub’ shit list) and they won’t accept that Rammstein thinks of themselves a big joke for the most part. It’s sad really.

And in closing, the sarcastic and hilarious words of Mr. Till Lindemann (my future husband):

“We are not Nazi, neo-Nazi or any kind of Nazi. We are, however, the greatest rock band in the world.”

I feel the same way about Rammstein. Their fan base is so irritating that it’s actually affected my liking of them. Same goes for KMFDM.

I have never owned a Slipknot CD or heard a Slipknot song, but their fans are such miniature shitheads that I will never like Slipknot, regardless.

Hehe…i’m totally agreeing with you guys on Rammstein. Some of their fans just don’t understand how wonderfully funny and sarcastic these guys are! Plus, they’re probably not helped by the fact that their musical knowledge is very limited and they can’t see bands like Laibach and The Smiths do the same thing…as far as creating an overblown sarcastic image goes.
