What words or phrases would you like to see banned from the SDMB? OK I’m using the word banned for effect, but what would you like everyone to agree to discontinue using on a voluntary basis? I think some things are used too often or instead of real communication. My nominees are: meme strawman “google is your friend” Please don’t look up any of my posts, I know I have used them myself. In fact I used meme today(but I did cringe when I did it). You got any nominees or does anything go? ---

What the hell does “meme” mean? Me Me? Short for memorandum? Whatever you decide, you must keep “Meh.” It’s a great word. ---

Strawman, yes. I’ve seen conversations go like this: **Poster1** : Makes a slightly inflammatory point. **Poster 2** : Makes refutations, 1,2,3 **Poster1** : > [@Poster2](#): > > Refutation 1 Strawman. > [@Poster2](#): > > Refutation 2 Strawman. > [@Poster2](#): > > Refutation 3 Strawman. I think we should ban any term a poster learned in their high school debate class. Strawman would be included, but so would so many others. Great Debates is filled with this: **Poster 1** : Bush couldn’t have won because I don’t know anyone who voted for him. **Poster 2** : Ahh but that argument is a classic _ad hoc ipsa loquitor_ fallacy. For those of us not on the debate team simple English will usually suffice. ---

The rolleyes smiley. I fucking HATE that thing and it makes me see red any time I run across it. And if it’s used in reply to one of my posts, I’m ready to kill. I can handle condescension… hell, I’m as bad as anyone about it, but there is just something about that emoticon that induces blind rage. Maybe the extra smarminess? Also, any in-joke that’s more than a week old. Assuming they were even funny in the first place (and 99% of the time, they weren’t), in-jokes have a very finite shelf life and lose their humor fast. “Hi, Opal”, “I burning your dog”, and “1920’s Style Death Rays” are just obnoxious anymore. ---
