well, I think there’s different situations involved. I absolutely agree that referring to a "JDT"esque post should be acceptable, and frankly, I also made a “gotcha ya” reference the other day (too bad **CNote** didn’t see it), there’s some other situations and posters that I think warrant different issues.
For example - there were a couple of long time posters who ended up banned, where I think there’s still some sore feelings (and one in particular gets quite upset when he/she thinks some one is talking about her/him -so if you’re reading this, I’m not referring to you). And, quite a few others where mentioning them feeds into their pathology.
But, as G-D is my witness, I, for one, plan on still referring to **Tug-A=Hoys** ™ when the situation calls for it.
And, the ‘gotcha ya’ reference I saw as more of a ‘homage’ as it were to the 'kinder, gentler **WB** , not as a stab.
(for those who don’t know - the ‘gotcha ya’ refers to a thread that was started by **Wildest Bill** in which he talked about wanting at his own funeral, his hand pointing out as if saying ‘got ya’, except that he wrote it ‘gotcha ya’. He seemed to find it amusing himself that it came out that way. The JDT refers to a poster who was absolutely **consumed** 😃 by the topic of circumcision )

The problem is there are far too many of them to keep track of so it becomes inefficient. Therefore, we should
1. Get rid of some of them
2. Combine some of them
3. GOTCHA YA foreskin, Opal!

What can I say? Wildest Bill never bothered me much. Neither have a bunch of other posters who are now banned. Seeing them getting slammed around here after the fact, and when it’s impossible for them to respond to it, strikes me as wrong.
But I guess unless you know the situation in which a person was banned, and what another poster is referring to when recalling that posters name, a person shouldn’t read negatively into it.
I did.
Mistakes like that are bound to happen, I suppose, when employing a fantasy theme like the one above (Am I remembering my coursework on the theories of communication correctly here?).
Is that the funniest goddamned thing to be written around here in a while, and totally apropos (Sorry **pldennison** ) for that thread, at that time?
From the opinions of others, it ranks up there.

Here’s my 2 cents; feel free to make change.
If you are in a thread and somebody starts bitching and moaning about how they got 7 speeding tickets in one day, feel free to toss in a “subtle” reference to a specific banned poster. Same holds true for a circumcision discussion.
If you are trying to be asshole-ish about it, though, it shows that you are shy of class. It’s not really proper to bash a “certain un-named poster” for a while and end it with a “yer pal,” such that it smacks of negativity.
Again, just my thoughts.

I’ve read and posted here for quite some time, and the number of inside jokes and references I don’t understand is astounding. Although this can be annoying, it is possible to search for what I missed the first time. A rule against attacking the banned is easy to follow and keeps people who might already be angry from increasing in anger. A rule against refering to anything a banned poster ever did or said is much harder to manage. Some of the the jokes started while the poster was still a poster. We’d also have to figure out whether the reference is to someone who was banned or someone who just stopped posting.

As far as I am concerned banned posters are fair game. In fact, I anticipate the banning of some present and future posters so that we call all take pot shots at them with impunity. It is always safest to kick a dead lion. I must admit that WILDEST BILL, like Poor Jorick, was a man of infinite wit, albeit infinite half-wit at times. I miss him. ☹

I actually uttered the phrase “Gotcha ya” yesterday. I can’t quite remember the context, but my friends were a bit confused. I’d have to agree that “Gotcha ya” is in the public domain. And I really don’t see it as a dig at WB. That thread was one of the funniest he came up with, and people who were normally annoyed by the man were genuinely amused by “gotcha ya.” I also see it as a tribute to the “minimally moronic WB.”
It’s a potshot in no stretch of the imagination. If in two years someone comes into a thread where the OP is making zero sense and says “OG SMASH!”, I’d find it hilarious. Not because it’s a rip on whatshisface, but because it’s a rip on someone being an idiot.
