I have never before complained, I don’t think, about paying to post. I have not complained about where my money is going to. I’ve never whined about the servers. I didn’t even complain about the Google ads - they’re pretty unobtrusive, if a little over-interested in my penis. But _banner ads_? I’m paying money to visit a site with something that _moves_ and shakes and shimmies and distracts me and we hates it? Because that’s kind of an asshole move. It’s tacky and vulgar and somebody should seriously be ashamed. ---

Quick question - where are these ads? I completely have not noticed, but I use Firefox with adblock. Today, while at school, I’m using IE and can see all the Google ads, but have not been logged in the whole time I was browsing and never noticed them. I’m just trying to gain full understanding. This is a very, very bad thing. The person or persons responsible for this idea is/are very, very stupid and should be very, very fired. I am currently not seeing any banner ads, thankfully. ---

They’re right under the blue “Straight Dope” masthead. They are color and they move and on my computer they aren’t even the same length as the masthead so it offends my aesthetics. ---

There are banner ads now? Where are they? I don’t see them but I’ve got a plug-in called PithHelmet to deal with that stuff. ---

I haven’t seen them yet: it must be blocked for me somehow. But if this is the policy, I won’t be subscribing next year. Am I a person who constantly complains about the board and moneymaking schemes? No. Am I a person who longs for non eye-straining posts? Yes. In fact I probably won’t finish out my stint here if these are unavoidable. This is a really stupid idea. ---

I’m not seeing them, though I see the sticky in atmb has been updated to say they’re displayed for all members. And I’ll join with the rest saying that it’s a horrible idea. ---

I totally agree. I too have never complained about paying to post… Hell, I’ve even sponsored a poster or two. I didn’t whine about the Google ads, as they fit in with the general motif of the board. Plus, the Google ads are nice and still and quiet. But this, this is absurd. I could understand having them up for non-members. But paying for a service just to have it put up colorful, flashy ads about God knows what… just doesn’t appeal to me. I never questioned where the subscription money went, but now I’m starting to get curious… So, in short, SDMB… WTF??! ---

Here’s another Firefox user w. Adblock who never saw’em. If I did, and wasn’t able to filter the crap easily, I’d never continue my subscription. I pay you this way or that - not both. (And _that_ way? - forget about it.) ---
