Banner ads? You're kidding, right?
That’s an interesting suggestion, but what if they asked for an outrageous amount, equal to several years’ worth of memberships?

But that also brings up another point. If they don’t care about the message board, that would seem a pretty good indication that they don’t care about The Straight Dope. They could shut the message board down and keep TSD, but I wonder if it’s vulnerable too. I wonder what “Cecil” thinks about all this.

I think there are enough people here of various levels of wealth that could facilitate this buyout.
I don’t believe that would be possible without essentially starting from scratch anyway.

And if you’re starting from scratch, it doesn’t make sense to pay more than you have to.
Agreed.
I just read the posts at Cluricaun 's link (thanks). I didn’t realize that The Straight Dope was a registered trademark of the Chicago Reader. I thought it was a tenant of the Reader, not a property.

You’re welcome. Someone somewhere else in one of the Banner threads posted the fact that the “SDMB.com” domain is availble for sale. I don’t know if the acronym is trademarked and I’m not wading through all this shite again just to find the post.

Yeah, I saw that post too but I don’t remember where I saw it. I followed the link, but you know, I just really REALLY hate domain name squatters so while it’d be great to have that domain, I puke at the thought of buying it from someone. I did try sdmb.org and net and they were taken too.

I haven’t had so many server timeouts since I left AOL and dialup five years ago. Then I figured it was at least mainly my fault, but now this message board is the only page that fails to load.
You know what Liberal, I am not a fan of yours. But if you started up the new SDMB, I’d go. And if I started one, you’d be more than invited. Because all the people here, the mix, the tone, is what makes it. Shit, if everyone was like me, I’d buy a gun…
You know, it’s funny because that’s happened on occasions before — everybody in the community coming together for some purpose or another. I remember the Left Behind invasion. Poly, Tris, myself, and other board Christians joined everyone else in fighting against those people. I was me-tooing Czarcasm, for crying out loud.
Very good points, jsgoddess. Ok, why don’t we try to buy the SDMB?
You know if this gains any momentum, please keep me in loop. I would be willing to join the effort to keep the SDMB afloat under membership ownership and I would be willing to do some of the tech work for free.

IF you need any molecular genetic analyses done, I’m your gal!

I answer a mean phone, and I have good taste in music, if that helps anyone!
From this thread and reading other threads, there are obviously a lot of people who just don’t see what the big deal is. It’s a lack of empathy, I think, and a willingness to put up with any and everything the PIC throw at this board. It’s kindof amazing to me. The ads are blocked for me now, but I can’t imagine turning away and saying “they don’t bother me, they shouldn’t bother you either” even though lots of people can’t install ad blockers on the machine they use to post from.

Boy, I hope the archives aren’t that far gone.

I can imagine it, because I’ve actually done it. I’m usually one of the dissenting voices in the “This Board Runs Like Crap” threads, because I don’t usually have a big problem with loading times. I was wrong and I apologize for being one of the “suck it up, you babies!” people.

Like Ed can do anything. If he goes to the Chi Reader and says “Take the banner ads away” the new asshole owners will just tell him to take a leap. If he threatens anything, they’ll just threaten right back to drop his column. Then he’ll wisely limp away.

They added the ads because they knew they fucking could. My only hope is they lose enough readership that it hurts.

I hope they put their cost-benefit analysis at 5% loss of subscriptions due to this realy bad idea. Because I’m sure the loss will be higher than that.

Thank you for that.

Shame it took until I actually got affected by something to do that, though.

Everyone has their tipping point, and at some point the other “suck it up, you babies” folks will get theirs tested. For many, it will be this board shutting down completely, and not getting a refund for the time they had left.

I just hope we have an alternate board in place before that happens.

I think we should all agree on an offsite forum to check in at, just in case the worst happens, and they yank this site entirely.

I’m sure there would be a notice on one of the side-boards. Like mine, for instance.

Good idea. I don’t know what that would be yet though. It’d have to be something pretty robust, to survive a surge of people.

I know for sure that Fathom is usually the biggest safe harbor when things go temporarily horribly wrong over here.

Everytime I’ve seen a link to other places I’ve clicked on it and put it in a Favorites folder, so I have them handy. I haven’t yet signed up anywhere.

Una, your board looks really interesting!

I do think it’d be nice to have an alternate board that we started though.
