I was expecting him (or a secretary) to type them out, but instead Barry turned on a tiny tape recorder and put his record on the stereo. I could hear the song playing in the background, then he would “interpret” the lyrics by repeating them. Needless to say, his voice when speaking wasn’t much more intelligible than singing!

Okay, maybe it didn’t help you much, but if you still have this, do you realize how lucky you are?

I was saying to my brother this evening that it’s unlikely anyone in history has helped more people get laid than Barry White.

Guys, I need your help in resolving something. When I studied in Maastricht, a story was doing the rounds that mr. White lived, or once had lived (depending on who told the story), in the nearby town of Vaals, where he was married to a Dutch woman.

Now, I’m no huge fan of mr. White in that I know all the details about his private life, but the story always sounded rather iffy to me.

Anyone who knows what the true story is?

Seems iffy. None of the bios I’ve read about Mr. White in th last 3 days indicated that he had been married to anyone other than “a childhood sweetheart, identified only as ‘Mary’ in his autobiography” and Glodean James of Love Unlimited Orchestra. It seems he also spent most, if not all, his life in L.A.

“Soul Train” founder Don Cornelius says, “There was no match for Barry White.” He says White wasn’t singing his sultry songs for just anyone, but specifically for his second wife. Cornelius says, “He was singing and writing for his own bedroom.”

And this, my favorite…

… Barry White’s silken, irresistibly sensuous, rumbling baritone that could swoop into an intensely profundo basso. It was a voice that could make the most mundane words seem rich with possibility. To prove that, David Letterman once enlisted the R&B legend to read a Top 10 list, “Words That Sound Romantic When Spoken by Barry White”:

Funny thing: They did sound ridiculously romantic when spoken by Barry White, the Maestro of Love, the Sultan of Soul, the Buddha of the Bedroom.

That, I think, is one of the best tributes to the man I can think of. (I want to know the whole list. tho!
