And what would you tell them after they finished yelling at your and giving you double fingers?
Remind them what time the next bus for (fill in site of your AAA affiliate) leaves.
I’m not calling for either of these systems, I’m just saying a pitch count makes more sense than an innings count for several reasons, the least of which in my mind would be eligibility for wins. But at least under a pitch count a starter would have a chance to be eligible for a win, they would have no chance under a three inning system without a change in the scoring system.
In theory this is absolutely doable with current roster sizes. It also probably would result in a better team.
The problem is that it’d take YEARS to build a team’s roster up to being able to do this. In addition to requiring a staff composed entirely of pitchers who can throw 50-60 pitches every three days, you’d need a minor league system made up of pitchers just like that, trained to pitch in just such a system, because when pitchers get hurt, as they of course do no matter how you handle them, you need more pitchers to step into the fray and be able to work within this system.
