The season starts tomorrow. I couldn’t be happier. Well, I _could_ be happier, I guess, but… um, well, I’m thrilled about baseball season, and I feel like sharing my glee with the world. 😉 Go Tribe! Actually, for those of us who are Ranger or Blue Jay fans, it started today in Puerto Rico (I think). Orlando Cepeda threw out the first pitch and Roberto Clemente’s widow was there. ---

Go Giants, go! Go Giants, go! Go Giants! Go Giants! Go Giants, go! (So, imagine the little tune and the pumping arms, it’s a cheer). Giants take the World Series! It could happen. And I will believe that it will happen until the day, (although this day won’t come this year) the Giants are mathematically eliminated. Never give up. It’s fan time\*. \*Fan time means that nothing said during this period will make sense. Any words, in fact, any articulation of sound, should be interpreted as grandiose exaltations of the “home” team. The speaker (the “fan”) is rendered completly incapable of logical or discriminating thought at these time, though they may be remarkably intelligent when not under the influence of the “season”. There appears to be no cure for this affliction; those badly stricken may have several “seasons” (baseball, football, hockey, basketball, among others) in one year, often overlapping, thus causing an almost constant inablity for them to carry on a conversation about anything except “their” team or teams. Limiting access to TV and newspapers, as well as avoidance of any “stadium” or “sports arena” (where those afflicted gather together in a virtual orgy of worship for the “players” on these teams; and where they will likely encounter followers of the other team(“visitors”), leading to excessive shouting and even face painting), will sometime allow for the control of the worse of these symtoms, affording the “fan” some measure of normalacy. But this is only a fleeting release, eventually, someone will make a casual remark about the team, perhaps second-guessing the “manager” or commenting on a star’s new billion dollar house, and the “fan” will once again be drawn into the dark, narrow world that is sports fandom. Money for research is desparately needed. ---

Yeah those of us who cheer for the Jays can enjoy having the first place Toronto Blue Jays, unfortunately this is probably the only time they will be in first…but I will watch anyhow, I am a fan not a band wagon jumper. Keith ---

Reds fan checking in. I don’t wanna hear the crap about my teams starting rotation not being good enough. If Dessens and Fernandez get their act together then we got us a good season. The offense will be a good one this year with everyone healthy. And of course our relief pitching will be among the best in all of baseball. GO REDS! ---

I mean, they do play good baseball. They now have my favourite AL pitcher, Mike Mussina, in their starting rotation. And as far as NY teams go, it’s either them or the Mets.
