Basic Training Question

I think Fort Knox is still doing basic, but I don’t know anymore for sure…they moved the armor school to Fort Sill…

I was under the impression that the Army is going to try to send you to the nearest BTC to your home, as logistically speaking, it would save the government transportation costs, although many of the remaining bases are more easterly. AIT is a whole other consideration…I am pretty sure the Army will try to send you to a post where both your basic and AIT can be completed in the same post without having to transport you twice…for instance, if your MOS is artillery, you’re very likely to do Basic at Fort Sill and then mosey on over to a different barracks to do your AIT on the same base.

If I can get my little brother to enlist and go to Ft. Benning, we’ll have the quadfecta! OP, which basic training course you go to often has to do with when your job school (AIT) starts. My course was 4 months, so they have to time your basic training entry to match up with that. My brother’s AIT was over a year long, so you can imagine how precise they had to be with him. On the contrary, my sister was six weeks, so they could throw her anywhere.

I love telling this story, so I’ll say it one more time:
My flight to basic training was delayed a half hour due to some regulatory problem with the tail number.
My flight got in late, so I missed my connection and got the next flight. 4 hours late.
I missed the last bus to the fort, so I stayed overnight at the airport. 14 hours late.
I got to reception the following morning, so I was too late to start with my scheduled basic training company. I started with the next ‘cycle’ instead. 3 days late.
My new company graduated, but I missed my scheduled departure to AIT. I stayed an extra 3 days in basic training. 6 days late.
I got to my AIT station eventually, but I missed my scheduled course start and had to wait for the next one. 8 weeks late.

And that’s how a plane screw-up kept me in on active duty for an extra two months!:smack::mad:

I was Ft. Jackson. Everyone where I did AIT (Aberdeen PG) was Ft. Leonard Wood, or Ft. Jackson. I thing Ft. Benning does one-station for the infantry-- or, it did. I’ve been out for a long time.

Yup. If you learned everything right away, then you got KP the next day, while the LCDs retrained. I had KP more times than anyone else. The runner up was my bunkmate (below me) Johnson, who had one fewer, but she had me beat on CQ duty. I used to consider screwing up on purpose to avoid KP before I discovered mermite duty. I packed up the field chow for every company in the field, and got left alone. It was just me, doing all of it, with no drill sergeants, or anyone keeping an eye on me. Compared to the rest of Basic, it was a vacation, just to be let alone for something like six hours.

The Browns favor the Army but we’ve had a few in the Navy and Air Force as well. Recently, everyone joining the Navy has come to Great Lakes, and everyone for Air Force has gone to Texas - I don’t think either branch has more than one option anymore.

Yes the Navy used to be Great Mistakes (lakes) near Chicago, Orlando Fla, and San Diego. You were sent to whichever was closer to, or on the same base as your eventual A school. Now it’s only Great Lakes.

 “First shirts”?

 “Mermite duty”?
Sheesh. Vets.
ETA: Rivka, you weren’t a Marine, were you? I fell instantly in love with a beautiful Marine I saw holding up high an unfurled Torah in shul. Beautiful and major pecs underneath her uniform.

Actually called the Rabbi (that was DC, I was NYC). He advised against contacting her and wouldn’t help me out finding out who she was.

First Shirt = Senior enlisted person in a unit, usually E-7 or higher. Deals with various administrative tasks along with regular duties.

Leo Bloom, you have never been in the military, right?

Just a WAG.
