Batgirl movie put into the vault. Not to be released

For reference, here’s some stuff from Twitter about what a jackwagon the new CEO is.

Shitting on WB’s 50-year relationship with Clint Eastwood:

More specifics on how he’s taking a howitzer to the production slate he inherited:

Basically, anyone who isn’t a guaranteed tentpole topliner is now looking somewhere other than WB for a deal. I predict in five years their creative pool will be gutted and Zaslav will be gone.

Yeah, it seems to be that the new guy has a vision for DC and it doesn’t involve anything from the old guard or Snyder. Beyond The Trailer says that WB will likely pause all DC stuff after Aquaman 2, Shazam 2 and Black Adam.

Who does Warner Bros have as their equivalent to Kevin Feige?

Nobody right now.

That’s a shame.

I hadn’t heard about any of this and I have to say it’s really disappointing/disturbing. I really enjoyed Miller’s performances as The Flash, but they seem to have gone off the rails in a major way. Yikes.

Maybe they can put it out as a Steaming Release :poop:

He better keep his hands off Peacemaker.

Could this be the beginning of the end for comic book movies? There must be a saturation point somewhere. I’d bet nobody at the time thought Westerns would, for the most part, go away.

No. DC has been pretty incompetent. Marvel, on the other hand, is a freaking juggernaut1 and seems to be just getting started, with all of the power of Disney behind them. They just revealed a crap-ton of new films and shows in the works, and these projects are both popular and critically acclaimed. (Stinkers like Morbius are bumps on the road, they have many more hits than misses, plus that wasn’t a Disney film either.)

1 I would not be surprised to see an actual Juggernaut movie at some point.

I agree about Marvel; the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been an amazingly success series of films, with many of them having billion-dollar box office revenues. I’ve seen most of the movies but almost none of the TV shows, but it’s a well-integrated machine.

James Gunn has already said it’s okay…I think his exact follow-upwords were, “calm down, people.”

I’m the opposite—I’ve seen several of the TV shows and almost none of the movies.

Agreed. With the exception of the first Wonder Woman film (and maybe Aquaman), the DC films over the past decade have had, to be kind, mixed responses – I place a fair amount of the blame on Zack Snyder’s grimdark vision.

I have a number of friends who are big fans of the DC comic books, and while they have not generally liked the movies, they’ve had a lot of love for the DC television shows from the past few years.

Marvel’s had a few misses (you mentioned Morbius; the Inhumans TV series would be another), but overall, they really are pretty danged consistent.

I tried to blank that from my mind, thank you very much. :confounded:

Tax write-downs aren’t magic (excepting things like the thing Uwe Boll used to pull).

So you release it in theaters. It nets $20M and you cut some taxes off $70 million instead of $90M.

But there could be clauses in various contracts that require HBO to pony up so much money to people once the movie is released. No company would ever admit to deliberately doing this so a cover story is always given since otherwise they can be sued.

I’ve also heard the Joker sequel is safe. Not that I care, but some might.

Yes!! I have heard that Lady Gaga is in talks to play Harley Quinn.

I think the next 12-18 months are going to be a bloodbath for streaming services as the pandemic fades away, inflation and recession settle in, and subscriber numbers plummet. So this decision does make some amount of sense, cutting costs and folding HBO Max and Discovery+ together is going to keep them going longer than other services.

That said, I think cutting projects that are complete or nearly complete is needlessly aggressive, and the extent to which they seem to be favoring Discovery over Warner Brothers content is weird. Discovery shows are cheaper but nobody from Naked and Afraid XL is going to end up in MultiVersus.

Apparently, the entire slate of HBO Max scripted shows is on the chopping block, which would include Peacemaker, Harley Quinn, Doom Patrol, Titans, Our Flag Means Death and others. However, it does look like Gunn got some sort of assurance about Peacemaker,
