G batteries (often called BUTTON batteries) are non-rechargeable cells, in either Silver Oxide or Alkaline chemistry. The Silver Oxide batteries outlast the Alkaline ones by approximately 5 times the length. Of course they cost more but that length of their performance is why.

S-- cells are normally silver. L— cells are normally alkaline. Apparently, AG-- cells may be either.

BR and CR cells are lithium. M and N were mercury.
