Ah, so that’s where the famous Waters of Casablanca come from!

[Louis: What in heaven’s name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Louis: The waters? What waters? We’re in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.]

Best Movie: Casablanca, no contest.

As an aside, it’s hard to imagine two movies with more polarized origins. GWTW was a high-budget, much-hyped production based on a best-selling novel, with the much-studied Civil War as its background. Casablanca was based on an unproduced play, set in a part of the world unfamiliar to most Americans of the time, with cast changes up to the last minute and the ending in doubt until after they filmed it!

The premiere of GWTW was a nationally-publicized Event, while Casablanca snuck onto the screen with little fanfare.

Whom do YOU prefer: David or Goliath?

Casablanca is an example of the perfection of what was the state of the art of the studio system at that time. Citizen Kane (I think the same year?) scrambled it all up and told a story in a revolutionary new way in almost every discipline. I, of course, love them both. They were both cheeky cynical, but Casablanca was cynical in a saccharine way, while Citizen Kane was just plain cynical.

Are Casablanca and Gone with the Wind my only choices?

Sorry, think I’m going to read a book.

Sure, Casablanca has a fantastic script,
And yes, GwtW is stirring and pretty to look at,
But frankly, I’m bored with them both.

Sorry.

I was getting sidetracked. Of course, older movies were very unfair to black americans. I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.
