Beatles (White Album)

How much could I get on eBay for an original white album LP with posters intact?

Why does everyone here hate “Goodnight?” It’s one of my favorites. It’s such a slow, soothing lullaby.

It always makes me feel dreamy and sleepy.

“Your Birthday” though, sucks.

This is why I love having the White Album saved as a Winamp playlist… it makes it so much easier to shuffle around songs.

Cut #1: The Beatles as one standard length CD
The first round of edits is pretty trivial. As released, the two-disc album was a bit over 93 minutes long, so about twenty minutes of material has to go:

Wild Honey Pie (1:01)
The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill (3:03)
Don’t Pass Me Bye (3:42)
Revolution 9 (8:13)
Good Night (3:11)

Reasons were generally accepted previously in this thread; total disc time of 74:10, right at the limits of a single CD.

Cut #2: The Beatles as one standard length LP
This is much trickier. By going to a two-sided LP, you give up the seamless nature of a CD playlist; time limitations are stricter and track order will have to be modified to make the record flow better. I’m going to assume a limit of about 25 minutes per side, giving about 50 minutes of playtime. Thus, my playlist (not cuts) is:

Side 1 (24:37)
Back in the USSR (McCartney, 2:43)
Dear Prudence (Lennon, 3:56)
Blackbird (McCartney, 2:18)
Rocky Raccoon (McCartney, 3:41)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Harrison, 4:45)
Happiness Is A Warm Gun (Lennon, 2:42)
Martha My Dear (McCartney, 2:28)
I’m So Tired (Lennon, 2:03)

Side 2 (25:05):
Everybody’s Got Something Hide Except For Me and My Monkey (Lennon, 2:24)
Yer Blues (Lennon, 4:01)
Mother Nature’s Son (McCartney, 2:48)
Piggies (Harrison, 2:04)
Sexy Sadie (Lennon, 3:15)
Helter Skelter (McCartney, 4:29)
Savoy Truffle (Harrison, 2:54)
Cry Baby Cry (Lennon, 3:10)

I was able to balance Paul (6 songs, 18:27) with John (7 songs, 21:32) and keep George limited to three songs. In retrospect, Piggies should also have been dropped, but it’s a fun little song and only two minutes long.

So… what went? In order from the original playlist:
“Glass Onion” - Too self-referential and takes too much space.
“Ob-La-Di” - Too sappy in comparison to what was kept
“Wild Honey Pie”
“Bungalow Bill”
“Don’t Pass Me By”
“Why Don’t We Do It…”
“I Will” - Short, sensitive, acoustic Paul song that simply didn’t fit.
“Julia” - Not-as-short, sensitive, John-with-guitar solo song that simply didn’t fit into the context of a Beatles album.
“Birthday” - Silly Paul song, except with lots of shouting and Ringo on the drums.
“Long, Long, Long” - Too plodding; the weakest George song on the album.
“Revolution 1” - I agree with Happy; the much faster single was better. This version seemed to drag the album down, and at 4:15, destroyed the perfect Lennon/McCartney balance I was trying to achieve.
“Honey Pie” - Too bouncy; the 1920’s feel was just out of place.
“Revolution 9”
“Good Night”
