Get me a small cooler. 2, no 3 bottles of water. A cup of wigglers from the gas station/bait shop/ pizza joint. I got a pole out the shed. Me, my fat beagle, my tiny Yorkie (whom I have to carry) head to the big pond. Ready to go. Got a nibble immediately. Ooh, this could be fun! The nibble was theft of my worm. Re-bait. Re-cast. Rinse & repeat. A dozen times. Damn catfish are breaking my heart. I can see them right under the surface, flipping around, laughing at me. This is not working. I decide moving around the pond might be a good idea. Drink one water. Betsy’s eating worms, (fat beagle). Rectify that. Yorkie is in high grass, she can’t get out. Rescue her. Pack everything up. Fishing pole, 2 bottles of water. 4 worms left. Move to other side of the pond. Fat beagle is panting, Yorkie too. Altho’ I carried her around the pond. 2nd bottle of water, goes to the dogs. Bait up with half a worm (ewwww), cast, drop in the water. Aaacckkk!!!. A definite bite. Catfish on the hook!! I won’t bore you with the exciting details of getting this bad boy to the shore. He’s for-sure caught! I pick him up to remove the hook. He’s a nice size. Fat. I may keep this one and cook him. About the time I thought that, the hook pushed through , he flipped the eff out. Crap, he barbed me. 2 places. I was shocked how bad it hurt. I threw him back in the pond. 3rd bottle of water over the boo-boos. I’m totally defeated. Slowly walk back to the house. Fat beagle panting. Yorkie under my arm. My heart is bleeding along with my boo-boos. I don’t think I’ll ever Catfish again.☹ ---

I’ll just smile and rub my stomach and try to swallow fast. But my remarks were directed more toward that callow catfish’s rude behavior than toward its potential tastiness. How many pounds do you think it was? Feel free to measure in units of Yorkies, e.g., 2.5 Yorkies. 🙂 ---

I get my catfish at a restaurant. 😉 There’s a lot of great Catfish restaurants in Arkansas. We used to visit the Hush Puppy in Camden several times a month. ---

Beck have you tried setting out some yo-yos? I’ve caught some big catfish on them. Ran them at night. There are Game & Fish rules that must be followed. ---

The ‘Hush Puppy’ is long gone. It was a good place to eat. If you get down this way, the best place is ‘Woods’, locally owned. Always packed. ---

It’s our private pond with fish we grew from fingerlings. I probably won’t fish again for 5 years or more. ---

I must withdraw my former comments. It occurred to me I’ve probably never had catfish that was prepared the right way. I’ve only had it twice, both times in home kitchens, not restaurants, and both times it was basically just dredged in cornmeal and fried. To me it had an odd “muddy” taste. And hush puppies! I’d eat almost anything if it’s served with good hush puppies. Plus I love the name and its origins. 🙂 ---
