Plus a) his language skills would probably be very valuable, and b) At one point, serving in the military was a big step forward toward being approved for citizenship. They could become travel bloggers; I’ve been watching videos made by a couple that travels full time. I assume they make enough from ads etc. that it pays their way. Or there’s the WWOOF approach (Willing Workers On Organic Farms). Hard work, but you can see parts of the word a tourist won’t go near. ---

The lil’wrekker follows those travel bloggers. As far as working for travel. Um…nope. She’s really not the field worker type. Hamza’s a sturdy young man. I don’t see military in his near future. Farm work even less. ---

She has spent 2 summers taking classes and this summer she had a ‘highly sought after’ internship at Tulane university that cost me a small fortune to allow her the opportunity and honor of attending. She’s a hard worker. Makes perfect marks. She’s had a library job the whole time she’s been in college. But, I know this girl. Sweat and toil are not the kinda thing she could/would do. I am willing to reward her hard work. I provide her a car, insurance, an allowance and gifts. (She’s on a full ride scholarship) But, dang it’s gotta stop somewhere. We may have gotten to the end of the line. Remember there will be a wedding of some kind, that I’ll be expected to finance. If I know her a trip to a justice-of-the-peace won’t do. At. All. I’m screwed anyway you look at it. Ugh! ---

There are plenty of WWOOFers here on the island of Hawaii. I hear second hand that it’s a rather iffy prospect, and while it can be great plenty of kids get taken advantage of. Or so sez people here. I have zero direct knowledge of the topic. Anyway, if they did decide to become WWOOFers I would recommend they proceed very cautiously with a lot of research before committing, just to be sure that they end up with an experience that is memorable in a happy way, not a terrible one. ---

Let them travel. Support it. Trust me, they’ll be better people for it. Money well spent. And you don’t have to give much, or frankly, any money. It’s pretty cheap to travel through Europe and Asia, the infrastructure is set up to cater for dirt poor recent graduates. No need to travel first class or stay in five star hotels. They are young, they can handle roughing it. Th y will probably enjoy it (people are stupid in their 20’s). My parents didn’t give me any money, just help in finding good deals, old suitcases and travel clothes, and my mother made me a travel pack, with some OTC medications, sewing kit and other essentials. Ok, they paid for the travel insurance, but that was because they insisted I get some, when I was not inclined to do so. Was perhaps 200 USD? Surely you have old suitcases, sweaters, Sandals and sun dresses which you can donate to the cause? (Got the alliteration). ---

My sister told her daughter that if she married and/or had kids less than 5 years after graduation, she’d have to pay back everything mom & dad paid for. She did end up marrying and having two kids, but now grandma is besotted. Besides, daughter is still working as an engineer, as is her husband. BTW - my sister offered my niece her choice of graduation presents - a long European trip to her choice of destinations, or the down payment on a house. My niece took the down payment. StG ---
