In addition to being mighty uncomfortable, sofa-beds are always REALLY heave and awkward to move. Your friends will thank you if you forego the sofa-bed option and get a daybed (since they’ll probably be helping you move when you get a bigger place).

Check the furniture section on [www.craigslist.org](http://www.craigslist.org). I was on there the other day, and there were some pretty nice looking sofa beds for pretty cheap. Of course, you have to pick them up, but if money’s an issue it would be a good place to start.

    - Actually, now that you remind me–sofa-beds are lousy for two reasons. They make lousy beds, and they make lousy sofas as well. They aren’t real comfortable for either use, and every one I’ve ever seen looked like they were built nearly identical. I wouldn’t expect one to be much better than any other.
. . . .

- I got my futon back when I was about 20 years old or so, and if you’re young and tough, they _can_ work. For a while. I left it extended as a bed all the time anyway, so I put extra boards between the regular slats, as the mattress kept working through the slats–and that helped a _little_. I had one that sat real low to the floor and I really kinda liked that aspect of it, but after a few years I woke up aching every day, and when I slept on regular beds that did not happen. The actual problem was the mattress material itself. It was stuffed with some cotton fiber that had no “give” after a couple years.

…Maybe the best thing now would be just a big block of open-cell foam the same size as a mattress, that you could lay down on the floor and use regular bed sheets on. Then when you’re not using it, you could just stand it up in the corner…
