Ignoring scholary journals (BORING!) I am proud (?) to say I once got something published in True Confessions. Oh yeah. A boyfriend gave me one as a joke, and I noticed that on every other page they were soliciting articles. I thought I could do this. Turns out I was right. Got $100 when I needed it pretty badly.
I’ve been published a few times in a sporting magazine in Ontario, they were articles I wrote about about winter sports (I wrote about dog sledding). It was a pretty exciting feeling.
The best-known magazine to have printed my work was Reader’s Digest, who bought an anecdote.
I’ve also been published in several science fiction magazines, like Asimov’s, Fantasy and Science Fiction, Aboriginal SF, SF Age, Realms of Fantasy, tomorrow SF, and others (Full List)
Oddest publication was the cover story for VB Tech, a magazine for Visual Basic programmers. They tried an experiment publishing science fiction stories.
Lots of newspaper letters, ranting about whatever. I HAVE had photos published in Billboard magazine, ad shots for Budget Tapes and Records. And, if I recall correctly, a letter to Analog magazine once.
I am discounting professional journals. That is too easy.
I’ve been published in magazines a few times. I was the editor and I couldn’t find anyone willing to write for such lousy pay, so I ended up having to write it myself.
And a letter I wrote to salon.com was published a couple years ago; mine ran right under one from Jane Smiley. That is so far the pathetic height of my fame.
Wow, I am soooo jealous of you guys! What I wouldn’t give to be published in a magazine! I like writing short stories, and in fact I got a chance to write one as an assignment for school. I did well, but the comments on the paper were discouraging, mentioning how I need to work on ‘craft’ and ‘style’ which to me feel like really abstract terms. I wish I had some sort of ‘craft pencil’ that will boost the craft of my stories by 200% or something silly. I guess my problem is that I have all these great ideas, but I’m just really lame at communicating them.
A small letter to the editor. Just like Mach, I had forgotten about an e-mail I sent to Yahoo mag… something about filesharing a while ago. I think I accidently tossed the copy… but I remember it had something about Lord of the Rings on the cover.
And I’m quoted a couple of times in
this book. Actually, the author was looking here a couple of years ago on the SD for teens to interview on tips for teens on managing money.
Nothing big.
Around 1994-95, I had a couple of “the Internet is your friend” articles in a corporate magazine called Computer Science World.
When I was librarian for a flight safety organization, I wrote a regular column of book reviews and article abstracts for their monthly digest.
I have an article on E.F Benson’s Mapp & Lucia novels coming up this spring in an online literary zine.
I’ve had articles published in The Comics Journal and Hogan’s Alley, all comics related.
File me under the ‘professional’ publishing crew.
Number of times my name has appeared in a periodical: just short of infinity. Especially since one house I worked at published three pubs daily that gave me a ton of opportunity.
But I agree that’s cheating.
Environmental Design + Construction published a groundbreaking article I wrote detailing the best practices for a revolutionary new system in construction. Everyone who read my article would be following the protocols set forth and entering a new business paradigm (do they still have those or were those out as of 2000?).
Of course, somehow it got pushed from their print edition into the bowels of their web site and, aside from searching for either the title or my name, there’s absolutely no way for anyone to find it. Let that be a lesson to people who submit to publications of any sort and consistently misspell the editor’s name!
It was a decent enough article though.
I had my photo on the front of a magazine once. It is of when I was an infant, and I am being held by former president Jimmy Carter. It is an Arabic newspaper, and the only photo they liked of him was the one with me in his lap…
Back in the 80’s, I had a short contest entry published, in a “Magic For Car Wars” fad.
“Summon Demon Cyclist”–a humorous take on Ghost Rider.
It may not be a direct answer to the question (or it may, since all it really asks if we’ve ever been published in a magazine), but I write for JIVE. So, yes, I’ve been published before. Usually a small, 300-word article, but I’ve gotten full page editorials before.
I’ve also had letters published in geek magazines like Gamepro, Animerica, and Game Players.
– Shawn K.
I’ve had three articles (plus a whole slew of letters) published in the NY Times, and a handful of others in the NY Post.
I’ve been on the editorial board of two computer magazines (IEEE, but they have ads, and aren’t transactions), editied special issues, one for each, and edit a column in one.
I’ve also written so pr type articles for some rags.
I had a poem published in Highlights magazine!
I’ve had a number of articles published in networking and security magazines. Dry, geeky stuff, but cool if you’re into it.
I’ve had over 30 scrapbook layouts published, and won Creating Keepsakes magazine’s Hall of Fame contest last year.
I had a letter printed in Action Comics back when I was in grammar school. My first magazine publication, in a way. I’ve had a lot of letters printed in various journals over the years.
As for articles, my work has appeared in Scientific American (my first article), Parabola, New Jersey History, Weatherwise, and Optics and Photonics News (where I’m an associate editor).
In addition, I’ve been in a lot of technical mags, like Physica Status Solidi, American Journal of Phyics, Journal of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (the only one to publish two articles by me), Optics Communications, etc.
It’s a pretty eclectic mix.
I’m hoping to get into Mad one of these days.
