Once upon a time we used to drink a brand of beer that had a bottle opener built in to the bottom of every bottle.

This would have been central NYS, in the early 90s, in case that helps.

Anyone know what kind of beer that was?

I’ll have to research that one a bit, but I know **Tres Equis** beer in Mexico has the bottle opener feature.

So, just so I’m clear on this: If you only have one bottle, you’re still out of luck, but if you and your buddy each have one, you can open them on each other?

**Carta Blanca** bottles used to have a bottle-cap-sized indentation in the bottom of their bottles that was used to open another bottle – I don’t know if they still do.

ETA: Apparently, \*\*Erdinger Champ \*\*has the feature as well. It’s a weissbier.

I think miller lite had that indented thing on the bottom.

Seems to me that would be MGD, but seriously, if I ever needed an opener, I’d just use the bottom edge of my Bic lighter.

Wasn’t it Knickerbocker? (Anyone else remember drinking them at the Bow and Arrow in Cambridge?)

As I recall, it wasn’t a real bottle opener for crimp-on caps, but a recess in the bottom of the bottle that would grab the screw-off cap. So nothing your shirt-tail or sweatshirt sleeve couldn’t do.

[hijack] How many designed-as-such bottle openers do you have on your person right now? [/hijack]

I’m at work, so only 3: one on my keyring, one in my Leatherman microtool, and one built into my belt buckle.

I have a round one on my keyring and have used my wedding band in a pinch (but that hurts).

I need to look into getting a belt buckle version - my “Home of the Whopper” belt buckle seems played out.

In college I knew a guy who could open beer bottles with his eye socket. That was something to behold.

Kinda gives new meaning to the term “blind drunk.”

I don’t recall any beer bottles like the one in the OP, but when I need to pop a cap, I find an edge of a hard surface (that doest mind some damage) hook the cap on the edge, then just give the top a slam with my palm. Isn’t that what everyone does?

Knickerbocker isn’t ringing any bells as the beer I am talking about with the built-in opener, but I did drink my share of Knickerbockers at the Bow & Arrow.

I’ll look for some photos to see if Knickerbocker is the answer.
