Well, the overwhelmingly Muslim Indonesian government does not appear to support the act as they are [trying the culprits for murder](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6127378.stm). I note that the Bebe also reports that the killings “shocked” Indonesia (no mention of cheering by Muslims in front of outraged Christians). It also is noted that the presumed cause of the attack was a reprisal for a number of Muslims killed at a school by a mob of Christians. So it appears that we basically have random idiots of different religions perpetrating violent acts so that the appropriate people on each side can get worked up to the point of hating each other as groups rather than hating the idiots. ---

Had Hasanuddin and his buddies been successful in their actual plan, it would have resulted in six deaths. There is more than enough shame to go around. ---

In October 2003, masked gunmen killed 13 Christian villagers in the Morowali and Poso districts - proving that the inter-religious violence in Sulawesi is far from over. I notice this has now become a joke thread? Oh well. Apropos of nothing, I will point out that I have, on multiple occasions, been hassled by annoying evangelical unitarian universalists. It’s not the creed; it’s the person. Remove the creed, and the same people would pick another, equally-stupid reason for violence. ---

Intolerance isn’t what motivates me. I just felt so exasperated after more than 20 years of close engagement with the Islamic world. But **tomndebb** ’s more cool headed – strike that – _calmer and more rational_ assessment puts things in perspective. I’m the sort of person who covered her eyes with her hands during the gruesome scenes in the movie _In the Cut_. It contained a ghastly visual pun: after he had given her head, she reciprocated and literally gave him head. I’ll stop here, I’m getting ahead of myself.
