They have to work in that town, they are expect to respect the office if not the man, and they don’t need to dis the President face to face, they can do that in their columns. We’ve seen this over the years in the briefings; they are definitely treated as privileges, not rights.
All that being said, I do like that US reporters are getting a bit feistier, like their BBC colleagues, and pointing out specific contradictions in some interviews, though not at press briefings.
I really tried to delete the insulting portion in the post.
IIRC fairly recently when press secretary Sarah Sanders dodged a question the next person allowed to ask a question deferred and kicked it back to the person who just had their question dodged.
Hopefully the White House press corps does more of this (and not just with this administration…dodging questions is an age old practice for the press secretary).
