As an incidental note, learning the alphabet backward is pretty easy since it breaks down into handy rhymes: ZYX and WV, UTS and RQP. ONM and LKJ, IHG, FED and CBA. I learned that when I was ten. With practice, you can drop the “ands”. I can also count to ~60 in my head using simple binary, so I’m ready for at least some of the field sobrietry tests, but since I drink very rarely, they’re skills I’ve never been called upon to perform. ---

Had it explained to me by an MP friend (lived in the barracks room next to mine) years ago that they’re not actually looking for you to recite the alphabet backwards. What they want to see is if you’re _aware_ that your attempt at doing so failed. ---

It was well before the ubiquitous dash cam and video recordings of DUI stops were quite the novelty. It was at night and the cop had a card in his hand, presumably listing the steps of a sobriety test. Cop [points flashlight at card, then at suspect]: Now I want you to recite the alphabet. Suspect: Uh, A… B C D E… F… G H I J K L… M N O P Q… R… T U V… W X Y…Z. Cop [points flashlight back at card]: No, you missed one. That the cop apparantly _had to check his card_ to make sure “S” was skipped cracked all three of us up. ---

If you’re singing “The Alphabet Song”, you have to rush quite a bit to make “HIJKLMNOP” ryhme with “ABCDEFG”, usually by jamming a slurred “elemeno” in there. A cop once told me that he would blow up a balloon and would tell suspected offenders that the sobriety test included catching the balloon when he released the air. I told him that was ridiculous, even sober people couldn’t catch one and he said that was the point, a sober person would tell him it was crazy, a drunk would get ready to try to catch it.
