Being sent to Las Vegas in 3 days. What do I need know now?!

I saw Love on our last trip and if you’re a Beatles fan I would recommend this over all the others. I’ve seen most of them now and it was just stunning. O would be my second choice if you’re alone, Zumanity if you’re there with a partner of the sexual definition.

I am still missing the Elvis one and now I have to add La Reve to the list!

Village Square is way out on the west end of Sahara (Sahara & Fort Apache). It’s more than a few miles from the strip, but there are buses that go there if you want to ride a bus for 20-30 minutes.

Ah, I skipped Love because I don’t like the Beatles. But still, decided will go and see it but not buying ticket until near the day and then seeing about the discounted one for that, and the Elvis one.

You are the first person in recent times I’ve spoken to who had good things to say about Zumanity. I understand why it exists, its vegas, bit erotic etc. But to me it was too lame to make much of an impact, and not enough cirque to make up for it, so thats why I don’t recommend it. If that was the only cirque I’d seen, I’d not really like Cirque, and I think it was a tad overpriced if I remember, more expensive than Mystere for instance…

We’ll do the Elvis one if its got a good price on it when we are there.

And perhaps La Reve again, the “splash zone” tickets are cheap (they were completely empty when we were there, and I hardly say anyone got wet) and right at the front…

But one thing, in case you don’t know, the Criss Angel “Believe” Cirque show is appallingly bad as a cirque show. Sure, if you like cheap and bad stage magicians, you might like that, but its barely cirque and the guy is annoying… We saw the redone version about 2.5 years ago. I think I avoid the Luxor in the future purely for the fact it has that show on…

Just a note on the Elvis one… apparently, they are going to be shutting it down soon to retool it and “De-Elvis-fy” it. So even if it’s still open when you’re there, you might want to take that as a sign of its quality.

Thanks to all.

Sounds like I’ll be busy and have lots of options.

Question about people watching and open containers. Since I am usually quite cheap and tight with money, my usual out of town drinking habits are to go to a nearby liquor store, buy a bottle (and perhaps some mix) and then just use hotel ice from then on. Is there a liquor store etc in that area? Can I buy a bottle of Maker’s and a big jug and just find a nice spot on the sidewalk to stand and people watch?

THIS is an excellent point. I had completely wiped the association with Cirque from my mind. Do not go see this show.

I think the cheapest spot for that would be the drugstore - there’s one on either side of the strip beside PH on one side and Mirage on the other and yes, people wander around the streets with open drinks all the time. There are bars on the sidewalk in a lot of places that serve drinks to go.

Assuming this refers to card counting, it will get you hurt bad…in the wallet, because you probably can’t do it right. Few people can. It’s not the kind of thing you can read a book about on the plane and then make bank in Vegas. It takes lots of practice, and it is exhausting work under casino conditions.

Pit Bosses, at least in the places I’ve played, don’t really care if you try it as long as you aren’t obvious about it, and you’re playing small stakes. You start getting cute when you’re playing Blacks (or higher), and you might be asked to leave.

What you can do is learn basic strategy for blackjack. A simple google search should find ample instruction. It’s easy enough that you can pick it up with a few hours study, and the dealers will even help you with making the proper play if you ask nicely.

I always check the Las Vegas Advisor’s Las Vegas Top Ten Values list. The $7.95 Steak Dinner at Ellis Island is quite good, Casino Royale has $1 beers and frozen margaritas and Caesars Palace’s $99 for any of 20 shows in a 48 hour period sounds like fun.

There’s a Walgreen’s in the Palazzo, right on the Strip (like, next to the pavement). If they don’t have what you want, there are plenty of liquor stores a short cab ride away. Ask a cab to take you to the nearest Lee’s Liquors an you’ll find whatever you want.

Yes, you can have an open container outdoors here. Yes, you can just stand and watch people on the sidewalk.

If you have ANY chance of talking some time off afterwards do it and visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and the surrounding parks (Zion and Bryce). Even if you are not all that outdoorsy.

It continually amazes me that millions of visitors can be packed into Vegas which is pretty much just somewhere to drink and gamble (not exactly unheard of activities in other locales), but 3-4 hours drive away is scenery like nothing else on the planet and its (comparatively) completely empty.

He’s going to be there for a convention. Zion is not fulfilling as a day-trip style adventure from Vegas, especially in the summer. You certainly can’t do it in an afternoon, with no vehicle.
