Best #1 single of the year retrospective: 1967

One thing about this list is the high quality of the also-rans: there are lots of really good pop songs on this list. When you flip forward to 1968 and see a lot of the junk on that list, you’ll know what I mean.

The two Monkees songs are both good, ditto songs by the Box Tops, Turtles, Rascals, Supremes, the Association, and even the Strawberry Alarm Clock. The only song on the list I wouldn’t want to hear is the Sinatra duet.

I went with Ode to Billie Joe, somewhat unique and haunting.

I’m partial to Kind of a Drag… I’m a Chicago kid and I grew up hearing it… but I had to vote for Re-Re… Just owned Otis’ song… OWNED it…

Dang. I totally glazed over Respect when I made my vote. Take one away from Hello, Goodbye and give it to Aretha.
