I’d guess that age makes a big difference. I grew up watching war movies from the 1930s, '40s, and '50s on television. I suspect that a great many Dopers are simply unfamiliar with the works of those periods, unless they’re film buffs. I think the first war movie I saw in the cinema was _ **Guns of Navarone** _, followed by _ **Hell Is for Heroes** _ and then _ **The Great Escape** _. I was then 6, 7, 8 years old, respectively. Nope, even before that was _ **Operation Petticoat** _. ---
