best bed you've ever owned

The most cheapo matresses excluded, it is not about " quality" , but about fit. What is good for someone else may not be good for you, and vice versa. Ikea has a 90 days love it or exchange it" policy that lets you try out a bed and matress combo. That would be your surest bet. Ikea matresses consistently test above average to good in independent consumers organizations tests, and they offer the best price/quality.

We’ve had a Sleepnumber bed for about 6-7 years now, I love it. Long list of back problems, 5 surgeries. This bed really helped on the comfort, for both me and my wife. I am in no way claiming it fixed anything, because it didn’t:D. Just is much more comfortable than the high priced Sealy we had.
Don’t know what they cost now, but we paid about $1800 at the time.

I just realized I didn’t share my own. :smack:

A Simmons Beautirest with the pillowtop. A california King.

The good - the size. My wife and I both like space as we both are active sleepers.

The bad - everything else.

It is much too soft for my tastes, as well as my wife’s, although she does like a softer bed than I do. It’s only 7 years old, and it’s been this way for the last 5 years easy. The pillowtop is NOT a feature I would recommend, as it not only adds to the soft, mushy feeling, but you can’t flip the mattress as it should be. The only thing you can do is rotate it, which doesn’t do much. I hate this bed, and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless you like a **very **soft bed.

I guess there are people that do like this kind of bed, but I’m not one of them. My wife likes a softer bed, I like one with more support, which is why I’ve been wondering about the sleep number. I do like the tempur-pedic, but I doubt she’d go for that.

I love the commercial where the couple is on the bed with the glass of wine while she jumps on the bed. On my bed, you couldn’t even set the glass down on the bed without it tipping. And that’s without anyone in it!

With the sleep number, being able to adjust the bed to suit 2 different people is great, my wife and I do not agree on what firmness is acceptable. Actually, I change my side fairly often depending on how my back feels.
We do have the pillowtop for our sleep-number, but I think they can be had without. And that option does not hinder any other activity, as the mattress is not flipped or rotated.

We got a Select Number bed back in September (low end model, no pillowtop and it doesn’t actually have numbers, just a switch for “firmer” or “softer”) and it is as nice as any bed I’ve slept in, which is pretty damned comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a new bed. Sweetie had been sleeping on a crummy mattress and his back is much better on a day to day basis. When I hurt my own back last month it was a big relief to be able to soften the mattress up till I was more comfortable. I would recommend a two-chamber model for any couple, even if you agree on firmness; when either of us rolls over on our own side the other doesn’t get jostled around.

Our service was great; although our salesperson goofed and ordered a single-chamber instead of a double-chamber, when we went in to complain, she was extremely apologetic, and they corrected the error at no cost to us and the new EQ arrived within a few days.

You DO need a platform bed for it instead of a standard frame with a box spring, and their platforms are ugly and not cheap. If you are handy, you might consider building your own platform which we did; we bought just the mattress and air pump, and that cut the cost to $600.

We got a memory foam mattress from overstock.com two years ago (it’s a king, and I think it was around $500) and love it to pieces. No problems with it in that time. We ended up getting an 8" mattress plus a 3" memory foam topper, so if the top gets damaged or whatever we can just change that out in a few years, but so far it looks to be in excellent condition still.

I’ve had a full-size Select Comfort (sleep number) bed since the mid-90’s. I love it! I can adjust it to whatever firmness I need whenever I need it. I’ve had to move several times over the past couple of years and it’s great to just deflate my bed, roll it up, and throw it in the car!

It’s just a great to never have to flip the mattress.

I had a Select Comfort and had to get rid of it. I will stop short of saying it was the worst bed I have ever owned, but my wife would say that. The problem wasn’t the mattress as it was very comfortable. The ability to adjust it was great. The problem was the separate sleep chambers on the dual mattress. The dual chambers were separate from each other and between them was a piece of foam. You could feel a distinct demarcation point in between the two chambers. If one person had their side on firm and the other soft this created a “valley” if you were on the firm side. If you rolled over to “cuddle” your partner you “fell” off into this valley. Sucked big time.

When I was single I had a single chamber mattress for the bed and it was great. If you are single DO NOT order the dual chamber. You can never get both sides equal and it is very uncomfortable. The problem with the single chamber if you are sleeping with someone is it defeats the purpose of having individual adjustments and it acted much like a water bed. If one got into bed, the person already laying on the mattress felt as if they were going to get launched right out of the bed. I hate to rip Select Comfort and I know many people love them, but many other owners I talked to had the same complaint. Not to mention they are expensive.

Now, recently I slept at a Hampton Inn and I have to say that they had the absolute most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. It was incredible. So much so that when it comes time to replace our current one I will find out what brand and style they use and get that. Does anyone here know what the Hampton Inn uses. It was incredible soft, felt like you were cradled in a cloud, but somehow still very supportive. I dreaded coming home to our mattress.

The latex mattress we have now is far superior to all others we have owned. No more back pain, we don’t wake each other up, and even the dog likes it better. In fact, our mattress was superior to the one in the Disneyland Hotel, and usually good hotel mattresses are better than what I own.

latex mattress?

I was wondering the same thing.
Also, for the select comfort crowd, how expensive are these mattresses?

obbn, thank you for your perspective on select comfort.
I’ve always wondered about the middle section between two people of differing comfort numbers.

It sounds like that “falling off” feeling would exist no matter what, since there are two air chambers that are divided by a foam insert?
