I LOVE reading! I’ve been hoarding free books I get from a cool website that lists all the book deals (free and good deals) Amazon has. So I got to wondering what books have my fellow dopers read they fell in love with? Me: Room by Emma Donahuge Trains, Brains and Video Games by Alisha Hart This little piggy went to the liquor store by A.K Turner We need to talk about Kevin – can’t remember the author Of course there’s a million not recent and some recent I can’t think of So what about you, what great books have you read lately? ---

It’s not one I got from there, but [Code Name Verity](http://www.amazon.com/Code-Name-Verity-ebook/dp/B007Y7UVHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359165214&sr=8-1&keywords=code+name+verity) was excellent. ---

Some good books I’ve read lately: **Ready Player One** by Ernest Cline **Hounded** by Kevin Hearne (first in the Iron Druid series) **Impulse** by Steven Gould (latest in the Jumper series) **Angelfall** by Susan Ee (first in the Penryn series) **Under Heaven** by Guy Gavriel Kay **Slow Apocalypse** by John Varley **Lucifer’s Hammer** by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle (inspired to re-read by the above) ---

Well I can’t honestly say they were my favorites, but given the list of your favorites, I’m guessing that you would really enjoy two books I recently read by William Landay: _Mission Flats_ _Defending Jacob_ They are both intense, psychological works of fiction that seem similar to some on your list. My recent favorites include two non-fiction books exploring relatively unknown historical events: _Shadow Divers_ by Robert Kurson _The Warmth of Other Suns_ by Isabel Wilkerson ---

_Embassytown_ by China Miéville. I haven’t been disappointed in a book by him yet - not something I can say for any other authors I’ve been reading lately. (I’m looking at you, Jonathan Lethem). ---

Also, if you have several centuries to kill, you might want to take a look at the [SDMB Book Recommendation Thread Compendium](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=599130) that is stickied at the top of the Cafe Society forum. ---

Agreed on **Ready Player One**. [Crossroads Road](http://www.amazon.com/Crossroads-Road-A-Novel-ebook/dp/B004UC538I) is a hilarious novel about a man offered “the opportunity of a lifetime.” I didn’t know this until just now, but it’s apparently free to borrow with Amazon Prime. It’s $3.99 otherwise, which is a steal. ---
